Santa’s Stocking Fillers – tips and form for Doomben

Christmas stocking fillers

SANTA wasn’t his usual jolly self on Monday at Narromine, tipping 0/4 and getting the $1.65 favourite Bel Diablo beaten, but he’s back with some more tips at Doomben on Wednesday.

The big man loves an omen bet and he has picked out some quality selections at Doomben. It’s not too late to get stuck in, so sign up to Neds.com.au for the best value on Santa’s stocking fillers.

Doomben Race 1 – Fatz

Believe it or not, Santa loves some self-deprecating humour.

He tells us that “Fatz” is his nickname among the elves, so why not take advantage of this by backing the four-year-old mare in the opening race of the card.

The Bob Mahon-trained runner comes into this race having finished second at Beaudesert as a $3.50 chance and her form prior to that included a handy placing at Toowoomba.

Only three of the 13 runners in this field have placed at their last start and the $16 on offer at CrownBet.com.au is a price worth taking with the 3kg claimer Hannah English in the saddle.

Doomben Race 3 – Looks Like Elvis

Who are the two most impersonated people in the world? Santa and Elvis.

We can’t lay claim to seeing Santa shake his hips quite the way Elvis did, but there’s a hidden talent there for sure.

Looks Like Elvis is a talented three-year-old which scored a narrow win at Sunshine Coast in October before running poorly on this track in November.

We put that run down to the rock hard track and he has since bounced back with a tidy effort for fifth behind Pierata as a $151 chance.

The odds aren’t quite as big this time around ($8.50 into $5.50 with Sportsbet), but bookmakers are still offering good value and we’re hoping it won’t be Heartbreak Hotel for punters this time around.

Doomben Race 4 – Nordic Show

Santa loves a good musical, but the North Pole rarely offers his favourites.

He frequently travels to the likes of Denmark and Iceland to catch his favourite shows, which includes Annie and A Long Christmas Dinner, but Santa loves a punt more than anything.

Nordic Show has poor form on face value, but there was merit in finishing sixth behind Audree at Gold Coast last start and it has competed in much harder grades than this.

The Mel Eggleston-trained runner ran as a $151 chance in both the Gold Coast Bracelet behind Dawn Wall and in The Roses behind Kenedna. She’s clearly not up to that level, but neither is this field.

It gets a 3kg claimer in the saddle and she could be worth a play.

Doomben Race 9 – Crackacharge

Did you know that every time a Christmas cracker is opened, a fee is paid directly to Santa?

What did you think funded his Neds account? That’s right, Santa is making a mint from all those crackers we love to open around the table and we know he’ll be backing the namesake on Wednesday afternoon.

The Tony Gollan-trained four-year-old was a winner at Ipswich two starts back when beating Daring Deeds and that has been a good form guide since.

Unfortunately it didn’t handle the slow track at Doomben earlier this month, but conditions should have improved and the $34 at CrownBet is worth the risk as the current $2.20 favourite I Am Impinge was disappointing last start.
