The Hillside track at Sandown plays host to an eight-race card on Wednesday, commencing at 12:25pm AEST. Runners will be racing on a Heavy 9 surface with the rail out 12m for the entire circuit. Below are our best bets for the day, along with some quaddie selections for the last four races on the program.
BEST BET: BIRDIES GALORE
Patrick Payne and Billy Egan combine again with Birdies Galore, who is a last-start winner. The two-year-old daughter of Spieth x Atlanta Miss looks the goods and we think she can go on with it again in this race. She is two from two and has won both races by more than two lengths, so that in itself says she has some class about her. She settles on speed and we expect her to either dictate this race or settle just behind the leader and wait for the long Hillside straight. Egan, although Payne’s number one hoop at the moment, hasn’t ridden this horse in a race, but we think he will know plenty about her and would have been on top of her at some stage.

NEXT BEST: LITERARY MAGNATE
This horse has always shown something, and we think it can make it another win in this race. Trainer Matthew Williams and jockey Alana Kelly are both in form, and sometimes confidence goes a long way in racing. The horse itself wasn’t far away last start at Flemington when beaten less than a length in third. Literary Magnate has raced here before for a good second when beaten less than a length, and she has finished in the top four in each of her last four attempts. She rises to the mile, but we think she is up to it. The Maher & Eustace-trained Seacole is her danger and will likely be the second favourite behind our girl.

BEST VALUE: SUNFALL
This Zoustar x Queen Of The Falls gelding is having his third run in from a spell and is ready to produce now. His two runs in from a spell have been pretty good, including a third-placing where he absolutely stormed home late and with another 100m would have won. That was over 1400m at Sandown Lakeside for Craig Newitt, but this time Newitt has chosen Chis Waller’s mount in Green Flash, which is a slight concern. Jordan Childs takes the ride this time with Sunfall, but he is more than capable. Mitilda for Matt Cumani is a big danger in what is an open race.
