Wednesday racing tips for Sandown Hillside

The first twilight meeting for Sandown this season will see eight races run and won on Wednesday afternoon. With near-perfect conditions forecasted, the track coming up a Good 4 and the rail out 8m on the Hillside track, we are set fair for what should be a competitive day of racing. The first at Sandown will jump at 3:20pm AEDT.

Best BetRace 1 – Dragon Time (#2) $2.10 with Sportsbet

Frankie Stockdale has opted to run his four-year-old gelding on the quick seven-day turnaround after going down by under a length over the 1400m at this track last week. He may have gotten closer to the eventual winner and perhaps even won the race if he didn’t make a mess of the start. Arron Lynch has been on board for all but his debut run and seems to have a good affiliation with the horse, so it is no surprise that he retains the ride for this effort. The pair will settle towards the rear of the field, but with a genuine tempo expected over the mile, they should get the last look at them late.

Next BestRace 2 – Johnny Thunder (#3) $7.50 with Sportsbet

Surely this is the day Johnny Thunder breaks his maiden. The Mike Moroney-trained gelding has finished runner-up in all three of his runs so far this campaign and has gone around as favourite in his last two, so punters’ patience may be wearing thin. However, we’re happy to give him another go. He gets the services of Damien Oliver on board for the first time, and the pair should have no issue finding a prominent position from barrier four. If he gets a quiet time of it up front as expected, Johnny Thunder should be hard to run down this time round.

Best ValueRace 7 – Nordic Symphony (#1) $11 with Sportsbet

Simon Wilde’s five-year-old mare has turned her form around in her last two runs this campaign, finishing runner-up in both the Dunkeld and Mortlake Cups. She is the top weight for the penultimate race on the card, but the 3kg claim from apprentice Melissa Julius is a big help. Nordic Symphony maps to be one of the backmarkers, but she possesses a slick turn of foot on her day and should charge home late in the piece at a nice price.
