Sandown Lakeside racing tips – Wednesday, 19 August 2020

Sandown

An interesting card awaits the punters on Wednesday afternoon at the Sandown Lakeside track, with a few horses looking well placed to bounce back from below par performances. At the time of writing, we are racing on a Soft 5; however, with consistent showers hanging around from Tuesday afternoon to the close of the meeting, it may be worth keeping those genuine wet trackers at the front of your mind.

Wednesday racing tips for Sandown Lakeside

Race 1
Awkward @ $4.80 Sportsbet

We start of with a maiden for the three-year-old fillies, and it is hard to go past Godolphin’s Awkward (no.2), who has had three starts and yet to miss the placings. From barrier two, look for Brad Rawiller to settle her just off the pace. The extra 200m should not be an issue. The main danger to the top selection would be Starelle (no.12) after an encouraging debut.

Race 2
Future Force @ $4.80 Sportsbet

#BackPikeDrinkWhatYouLike could very well get a run just after 1pm on Wednesday afternoon as he jumps on board Future Force (no.8), who was a dominant winner on the synthetic track at Ballarat. The obvious query is if she can transfer that form to a potential heavy track, but she does have a minor placing when first up this campaign in similar conditions at Moe. Quite a tricky race with Celestial Sol (no.1) looking to bounce back after a disappointing run second up and the Busuttin & Young filly Tyche Goddess (no.7) looking to go two from two after a gritty win when settling just off the pace at Bendigo on debut. Then you have the resuming Surooj (no.6), who in a recent jump out ran third to Russian Camelot – read into that what you may.

Race 3
Look Sharpish @ $11 Sportsbet

A 10-horse field sees the return of the Tasmanian Oaks runner-up, Look Sharpish (no.5), who was racing super consistently during her last campaign. She will look to get across from the outside barrier around midfield and could get the last crack at them. The main rival is the top weight in Shotmaker (no.1), who blew away rivals upon resumption in a maiden at Wodonga and could be hard to run down here. We like the quinella on Shotmaker and Look Sharpish.

Race 4
Lunar Flare @ $2.30 Sportsbet

Race 4 sees the best bet on the card in Lunar Flare (no.2), who has been in great form this campaign. The five-year-old mare as a win and a second in both efforts over 2100m, and the win came at this track. With Damien Oliver on board and drawn middle of the field, she should prove to hard to beat. With the wet-track form and a gun hoop on board, this should be a nice collect for the punters.

Race 5
Skyt @ $6 Sportsbet

Some genuine money munchers go around in the opening leg of the quaddie. The ever consistent Cracksman (no.2) is on the quick back up after racing here last week for another minor placing when starting favourite. Austria (no.6) also goes around in this race with the alarming one win from 21 starts but 10 minor placings. Those two are must-haves in the exotics, but we are looking elsewhere for the winner. Top weight Skyt (no.1) won the Tasmanian Derby at the beginning of the year and may just have too much class for this field despite not having much to write home about so far this campaign.

Race 6
Carrie @ $4 Sportsbet

This one looks a genuine dartboard job, but we have settled on the resuming Carrie (no.7) for the Danny O’Brien stable. From barrier eight, expect Damien Oliver to go back on the mare before she bolts into the finish. You should also expect to see Sublime Miss (no.5) and Fudged (no.1) fighting it out at the business end. It’s s tough one to call, so we would suggest going wide in the second leg of the quaddie.

Race 7
Frankly Harvey @ $13 Sportsbet

An interesting jockey switch sees Mark Zahra hop off Imperial Lad (no.7), who was impressive winning at Cranbourne two weeks back, to snare the ride on Renegade (no.8) for the Tony and Calvin McEvoy stable. If the rain does come and we are racing on a heavy track, a strong recommendation would be to include Frankly Harvey (no.6) based on his 9: 3-4-2 record on soggy surfaces. If it is a heavy track we are racing on, then there is your best value bet of the day.

Race 8
Wilmot Pass @$2 Sportsbet

It’s a big field to end the day of racing at Sandown, and by no means is it an easy race to finish off the card. Wilmot Pass (no.11) had zero luck at Moonee Valley last start, and we would expect to see the four-year-old gelding return to the winner’s circle with Jamie Kah opting to retain the ride over the heavily fancied Proper Rogue (no.13). Another genuine wet tracker in Wilde Gem (no.12) is four from four on heavy going and one to add into all exotics.
