Sandown Lakeside betting preview – March 24, 2021
Eight races are scheduled to be run and won on the Lakeside track at Sandown on Wednesday afternoon. The track is rated a Good 4, but we may start in the Soft range, with plenty of rain expected on Monday afternoon and throughout Tuesday. The rail is out 9m for the meeting, and as often is the case on the Lakeside track, it may be up on speed throughout the running. Racing is set to get underway at 2:30pm AEDT.
Best Bet: Johandough
The Thomas Carberry-trained Johandough absolutely smashed her rivals in a Class 1 at Ballarat on March 9, winning by close to four lengths after racing up on speed on a Soft 5. When Craig Williams asked for an effort at the home turn, the Turffontein mare burst past the leader and put her rivals to the sword. The race on Wednesday is no doubt a touch harder at BM70 level, but it is against her own sex. From barrier five, Willow should have no issue in getting Johandough to the front, and we expect her to go all the way and build on her impressive form line.
Race 7 – Johandough (#6)[rmOC_events_list event_ids=1364398_07]
Next Best: The Billionaire
The Anthony Freedman-trained The Billionaire has strung together two wins from his last three starts, including a smart all-the-way win at Wangaratta on February 27. There is no doubt the Written Tycoon gelding prefers to be up on speed throughout the running, and from barrier nine with Will Price on board they look to be the leader in the race. Price’s 2kg claim gets them in just 0.5kg above the minimum weight, and that could prove pivotal late in the piece if the track is favouring on-pace runners.
Race 4 – The Billionaire (#6)[rmOC_events_list event_ids=1364398_04]
Best Value: Awkward
Awkward has indeed lived up her name in her last couple of starts. Three runs back at Geelong it looked like the penny had dropped for the Godolphin filly when winning in impressive fashion. She then ran into a smart one despite being well in the market, and last start at Pakenham she was beaten by just over 1.5 lengths in an average performance as favourite. If the track is playing fairly, expect Awkward to be hard to hold out in the opening leg of the quaddie.
