An eight-race card is scheduled for the Lakeside track at Sandown on Wednesday afternoon, and HorseBetting’s Victorian horse racing expert presents his best bets and free quaddie numbers for the meeting. The track is rated a Good 4, the rail is out 5m the entire circuit, and racing is scheduled to start at 1pm AEDT.

Sandown Best Bet – Saint Loft

The way the Julius Sandhu-trained Saint Loft won on debut at Bendigo suggested he was a horse to follow wherever he went to next, and in this small field of eight, we think he can remain undefeated. Having shown plenty of early toe, the three-year-old son of Written Tycoon managed to lead all the way and beat the short-priced favourite of the day, Viviane, with a bit of ease. From barrier two, we expect Craig Newitt will look to do something similar and dictate terms throughout, as it is rarely a disadvantage to be up on speed on the Lakeside track. At these odds, we cannot refuse.

Best BetRace 2 – Saint Loft (#4) $9.50 with Ladbrokes

Next Best Bet at Sandown – Pal D’oro

In the opening leg of the quaddie, we are expecting the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Pal D’oro to return off a seven-month spell with a win. Despite winning just once from six goes, the four-year-old son of Medagilia D’oro hardly knows how to run a poor race, and with form around the likes of Embolism and Captain Spud, he clearly has a touch of class. From barrier three, John Allen will look to have Pal D’oro settled close to the speed, where he can then ask for an effort at the top of the straight. With two minor placings to his name when first-up, we know he will handle the occasion, and in what does not look to be the strongest Class 1, he should be too hard to run down for this lot.

Next BestRace 5 – Pal D’oro (#3) $3.50 with Sportsbet

Next Best Again at Sandown – Witsabouthim

There is a bit of the unknown about the Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young-trained Witsabouthim, who is set to make his Australian debut on Wednesday. Having won his previous two starts in New Zealand in impressive fashion, there looks to be no reason why he cannot perform in a BM64 field like this. The four-year-old son of Savabeel is a genuine backmarker, so he will need the race run to his liking, but his chances will be aided by Josh Richards’s 1.5kg claim. If he gets a genuine tempo over the mile, then Witsabouthim should have the last look at them and ultimately prove too hard to hold out.

Next Best AgainRace 6 – Witsabouthim (#4) $2.90 with Bet365
