HorseBetting’s Victorian racing analyst brings you his best bets and quaddie numbers for the eight-race card at Sandown on the Lakeside track on Wednesday afternoon. The rail is set to return to the true position for the midweek metropolitan meeting, while the track is rated a Soft 7. Racing is scheduled to get underway at 12:25pm AEST.

Sandown Best Bet: Marcolt

We do not need to wait too long for our best bet on the Sandown card, as Patrick Payne saddles up Marcolt in the opener. He was last seen at Flemington on June 5 when beaten by two lengths as a $4.80 favourite over 2000m. On that occasion he was in the second half of the field throughout but made up considerable ground late in the piece, which suggests he should be hard to beat on Wednesday. Michelle Payne takes the ride, and in the small field of seven they should not be far from the running. Marcolt has proven that he can handle wet ground, so he should prove too good for this field on the back of a well-timed run.

Best BetRace 1 – Marcolt (#2) $2 with Sportsbet

Next Best at Sandown: Smokin’ Romans

Smokin’ Romans was crunched into favouritism when running third behind a smart pair on June 2 on the Hillside track. Dean Yendall hops on and is fresh off five winners at Swan Hill on Sunday, so connections could not have asked for a better booking. Expect the four-year-old gelding to settle in the second half of the field, and with just 55kg in the saddle he should be hitting the line strongly in the second leg of the quaddie.

Next BestRace 6 – Smokin’ Romans (#11) $2.50 with Sportsbet

Sandown Value Bet: Cliffs Of Belaura

The John McArdle-trained Cliffs Of Belaura steps out in the final leg of the quaddie and should lap up the wet conditions. With more rain expected in the days ahead of the meeting, we could very easily be on a Heavy track come the final race. The four-year-old Canford Cliffs mare is yet to finish outside of the quinella in two runs on Heavy going, including a dominant three-length victory on debut at Geelong. She is another who will get back and run on, and she might well prove too strong late at a nice price.

Best ValueRace 8 – Cliffs Of Belaura (#10) $9 with Sportsbet
