A nine-race card is set to be run and won on Wednesday afternoon when the Hillside track at Sandown hosts the midweek metropolitan meeting in Victoria. The track was rated a Soft 5 on Tuesday morning, but an improving forecast this week suggests we should see an upgrade at some stage during the meeting. The rail will be out 7m for the entire circuit, with racing set to get underway at 1:40pm AEDT.
Best Bet: Pale King
The Hawkes team saddle up their undefeated four-year-old gelding Pale King on Wednesday in a bid to make it four wins from four career starts. The French runner made his Victorian debut on the Lakeside track over the 1600m and was doing his best work late to prevail by just under half a length. The rise to 1800m second up from a spell looks ideal, and with Craig Williams retaining the ride, the duo rate quite highly. From the wide barrier we expect Pale King to get across to the rail and dictate the running. If given a quiet time of it out in front, then we expect him to run this at a decent enough tempo and still have plenty left in the tank when it matters most.

Next Best: Sign Seal Deliver
The Matt Cumani-trained Sign Seal Deliver was a smart winner at the Lakeside track on March 17. Even though the margin that day was only half a length in the end, he looked to still have a fair bit left in the tank. That win was over 2100m, and the rise to 2400m third up from a spell looks ideal. The Dundeel gelding has never won at 2400m from three attempts but does have two runner-up performances at the distance, suggesting he should be fighting out the finish. From barrier four, expect Declan Bates to lob him into a similar position as last time and have him building through the gears nicely. With a bit of luck on the home turn, he should prove too hard to hold out.

Best Value: Deepstrike
Two runs back, the Mick Price-trained Deepstrike was beaten just on three lengths by the smart Ain’tnodeeldun and Victoria Quay when well in the market for the Listed Hill Smith Stakes. After a five-month spell, he returned at Pakenham on March 4 and produced a sharp turn of foot to break his maiden as a $1.60 favourite. He now jumps up to a BM64 midweek race and steps out to 1800m, which looks to suit him perfectly. From barrier 10, Deepstrike should settle towards the rear of the field before savaging the line late.
