Saturday racing tips for Sandown Guineas
The Group 2 Sandown Guineas is one of the featured events at the Hillside track on Saturday. The 1600m race has attracted nine three-year-old gallopers, with Aysar coming up a short-priced favourite. The Sandown Guineas will jump at 3:05pm AEDT.
It was a horrifying watch for favourite punters in the opening event of the day on Derby Day when Aysar was beaten by under half a length despite looking a certain winner at the clock tower in the Carbine Club Stakes. He hit the front with 150m to go, but his stablemate kicked back and won it. He gets an easier-looking race here and should get his first black-type win in the Sandown Guineas. He draws the rails and will get a similar run as he did in the Carbine Club, but this time there should be no excuses.
Sweet Reply was a hard-luck story in the Desirable Stakes on Melbourne Cup Day when struggling to find any galloping room in the home straight until it was too late. She had plenty of support late in the betting for that run but could only managed a close fourth. In a smaller field and drawn in the middle, she shouldn’t have to rely on much luck to be in the finish here as well. With Sydney form being the superior guide this spring, it’s easy to see why she is right in the market.
Horrifying was one of the best of the rest in the Carbine Club Stakes, where he dead-heated for third some three lengths off the winner. He lost a plate during the race, so he could have finished closer than what he did. From barrier six, he draws to settle midfield and do no work in transit. With the in-form Jamie Kah aboard, it’s easy to see why he has some early market support outside of the two race favourites.
