Mark and Levi Kavanagh have two of the nine runners in race one at Sandown this Wednesday, which looks to be a nice one on paper for the two-year-olds with six of the runners having their first start. Amenophis on debut for the Kavanaghs is a big watch and has already been backed into $4.20 at .
Of the already raced brigade, Jamarra and Rozamia, who is the likely favourite, have already broken their maidens. Chris Waller’s Ring Ahoy, currently $10, was fifth on debut but will be sure to attract market support with Damien Oliver on board.
The meeting kicks off at 2:30pm AEDT, the first leg of the quaddie runs at 4:50pm, while the card will conclude at 6:30pm with an 1800m race which looks to have a couple of potentially smart ones in it.
SANDOWN BEST BET: MY WHISPER
Jamie Kah sticks with My Whisper and the pair are looking for three wins in a row after quality efforts at Kilmore and Sandown Hillside last start. On that occasion, the Peter Snowden trained filly settled just off the speed after being backed into second favourite and was too strong to the line over 1300m. She jumps an extra 300m but some of her rivals are carrying a bit of weight so she gets the nod with 57kg. Her last two victories have been on good tracks and with the continued warm weather, another good track should present itself here. Arctic Stone has won her last couple and Lunatic Fringe has won two of her last three. Both must be respected.
NEXT BEST AT SANDOWN: HAMERON
The Chris Waller-trained Hameron was impressive on debut, winning by 2.2 lengths at Ballarat after gradually making his run from the 600m mark. He returns for another 1600m race but this time has to race on a good track which is a small query. His maiden victory was on a heavy eight. Previous to that he was move to the Waller stable from Team Hawkes and had two jumpouts in February. He should be fitter after his first run and the market will be a good guide whether he has shown anything on good tracks previously. Detonator Jack is another who won on debut and will be a threat.
BEST VALUE AT SANDOWN: STAR WALTZ
The Matthew Ellerton-trained galloper returns after an 18-week spell and two Flemington jumpouts. Previous to that he started at long odds but was racing against handy company at Caulfield, Moonee Valley and Flemington. Her third at Flemington last time behind Espiona would have given her confidence and it’s just whether the Ellerton stable has her ready yet. Is 1000m too sharp, perhaps, but if she gets out past double figures, she may be worth a play.
