What Rosehill Races
Where Rosehill Gardens Racecourse – James Ruse Dr, Rosehill NSW 2142
When Saturday, April 29, 2023
First Race 11:20pm AEST

Metropolitan racing heads back to Rosehill Gardens on Saturday with a massive 10-race program set for decision. Some 157 acceptances across the meeting have punters dealing with monster fields and some classy types stepping out as well. The track is currently listed as a Soft 5 and may get an upgrade prior to race-day; however, with rain forecast throughout Saturday, the surface could deteriorate throughout the card, resulting in a Soft-to-Heavy condition by the last race. The rail sits in the true position and racing is set to get underway at 11:20am AEST.

Best Bet: Hellfest

We’ve been eagerly awaiting the return of Hellfest for the James Cummings yard. She’s been off the track for a spell of 133 days and went to the paddock on an impressive run behind progressive sprinter I Am Me on December 17. She finished third, 3.8 lengths off the winner, and did so in sharp time while chasing home a galloper who went on to win at stakes grade. Hellfest is a Group 3 winner in her own right, taking out the Typhoon Tracy Stakes as a three-year-old. She’s been beautifully placed by the Godolphin team here at BM88 level and her best form rates to be well in contention – particularly with the scratching of Democracy Manifest, who is headed to the penultimate race on the program. Her trials leading into this contest have been sensational, and with the classy apprentice Zac Lloyd taking the reins from an inside barrier, we’d be surprised if Hellfest didn’t hit the lead at some stage. She has to hold off some quality gallopers in the form of Fox Fighter, Kipsbay and Vowmaster, but we think she’s up for the challenge.

Next Best: Honeycreeper

Honeycreeper is a consistent four-your-old mare donning the Godolphin blue and will be looking to make it career win number four in this BM88 over 1800m. She’s built nicely into this preparation with four starts to her name, the latest coming at Randwick on April 15 behind Diamil in the Group 3 JRA Plate. It was her first tilt against the boys since her last campaign, and although the margin of 7.5 lengths looks disappointing, the race simply wasn’t run to suit this daughter of Teofilo. Princess Jenni went out at a manic tempo and left plenty of the runners flatfooted turning for home, with Honeycreeper doing her best work through the line after getting by some tiring horses. There’s no doubt she’s got a habit of missing the start, but we like the booking of Jason Collett to help offset a precarious position she may face. She’s versatile regarding track conditions as well, so if the rain does come in the afternoon, this girl should have no issues getting through the ground. If Collett can get her into a stalking position throughout the journey, you’re getting a fair price to find out.

Best Value: Wild Planet

Wild Planet is the forgotten galloper in the penultimate. We thought his return in the Group 3 Hall Mark Stakes was more than good enough to suggest the 1400m next time would be ideal for this son of Animal Kingdom. He finished fifth in the eight-horse field and came from last turning for home to finish 3.4 lengths off Vilana. You can easily tie his form through Coal Crusher, who comes through the same race, and Wild Planet meets his rival 1kg better off while getting out in trip. You can make the case it’s hard to back a horse that hasn’t won since 2020, and we concede he’s a risk; however, Wild Planet hasn’t seen a Benchmark race in a very long time. He has class on his side with form behind Australia’s top Group 1 weight-for-age gallopers, and if he can bring any of that to this BM100, we think he’s a cracking bet. James McDonald takes the reins and will look to be positive from barrier two, with the possibility of leading if Coal Crusher lets up. He should be among the winning chances when turning for home, and with online bookmakers giving us double figures, we can’t resist putting Wild Planet on top.
