The end of the Sydney Autumn Carnival is officially here with just the one Listed race on the program on Saturday for the running of the Lord Mayors Cup. A nine race program has been assembled on what will be a Soft 5 track with the rail out 3m for the entire circumference. Horsebetting.com.au brings you our full preview of every race on the program, as well as best bets and quaddie numbers. The first race at Rosehill will jump at 11:25am AEST.

Race 1 – Class 3 Highway Handicap (1200m)

Selections: 3-7-1-6

The first race of the day is another TAB Highway for the country gallopers to have their shot at a metropolitan race, so it is again a competitive field. Tash Burleigh has a very competitive strike rate with 12 winners from her past 50 runners so we are backing the Goulburn trainer in here. Three-year-old gelding To The Nines has won three of five career starts and placed third in the other two, so it is evident the son of Epaulette has a desire to win. Drawn ideally in barrier four under Jordan Mallyon, the gelding should settle in the first three or four and be in a position to win again.

Race 2 – 2YO Handicap (1300m)

Selections: 1-7-5-3

We have always had a bit of time for Chris Waller’s two-year-old gelding Conexy, and while the son of Nicconi has not won since November, his first-up run suggested he is ready to fire second-up. The flashy chestnut was beaten by Rhapsody Rose on debut and he then went on to win in a head-bobber, beating the talented Baby Wong who put a further eight lengths on the third horse suggesting those two could be worth following. Conexy was then lacklustre when last in the Listed Lonhro Plate at the end of his first campaign. The gelding resumed with a nice second when fresh behind the talented Overpass at Gosford over 1200m and now looks ready to tackle 1300m second-up. The each-way price appeals.

Race 3 – Benchmark 72 (1500m)

Selections: 8-1-7-5

A 1500m BM72 comes up next and we get to see one horse return to Sydney after Maher & Eustace took the gelding to country Victoria for two seemingly easy kills. Saint of Katowice had had eight starts for seven minor placings prior to his visit to Swan Hill where the son of Elzaam won by four lengths, before backing that up at Kyneton under the big 63.5kg to win by 3.25 lengths. Back to Sydney in a relatively easy race should suit the four-year-old here as he looks to make it three straight wins this campaign. Tim Clark is likely to eliminate bad luck from the equation and take him to the front from barrier two.

Race 4 – Benchmark 78 (1200m)

Selections: 6-3-4-2

Blondeau could not have been more impressive when winning at Gosford last time out by a convincing 3.25 lengths, beating home I Am Power and Henschel. The Chris Waller-trained gelding was set to be the next big thing in his two-year-old season after two super trials, but it took him until his sixth start to breakthrough on a Friday at Geelong. The son of I Am Invincible has drawn wide in barrier eight, but Tommy Berry can compensate for the alley by taking him towards the tail of the field and allow him to finish over the top of them. A repeat of his last start victory should see the three-year-old back in the winners’ circle again.

Race 5 – Fillies & Mares Benchmark 78 (1200m)

Selections: 10-7-6-1

The half way point of the afternoon is a tricky little fillies and mares race, and like the market, we have found it difficult to sort them out. At the price, we want to be with three-year-old filly Sahra after she won nicely at Canterbury last start on a Heavy 8 track. The Hinchinbrook filly will appreciate 1200m again and will enjoy a bit of cut out of the ground. Drawn wide in nine is a slight issue, but with only 55.5kg and Rachel King on her back, she should be right in this. No knock on Turnstyle at all after the Bjorn Baker-trained filly won by 4.5 lengths last start, but we just think the win may have been flattered by the leader-bias track and the Heavy 8 conditions.

Race 6 – 3YO Benchmark 72 (2000m)

Selections: 2-4-9-10

Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott are giving their well-bred gelding his metropolitan debut on Saturday, and it looks a winnable race. Maranoa – a son of Snitzel out of a Crown Oaks winning mare Faint Perfume – has been ultra-impressive in his three career starts, winning by 3.5 lengths on debut at Nowra, before being nutted in a photo at Kembla Grange and then winning the Wagga Guineas in an all-the-way style to win by 1.6 lengths. The three-year-old does hold a nomination for next week’s Queensland Derby, so clearly the stable has a high opinion of him. Jean Van Overmire will lead from barrier five and after the apprentice’s 1.5kg claim, the gelding only has to lug 54kg. He should be very hard to beat in this.

Race 7 – Listed Lord Mayors Cup (2000m)

Selections: 16-15-8-2 (Read our full Lord Mayors Cup preview and tips)

The feature race of the afternoon is a little bit disappointing in our view, and we can’t have Parry Sound as $3.40 favourite (with Australian bookmakers), so we have looked wide. Stockman is a bit of an enigma, but if the son of Tavistock can bring some of his best work to the races on Saturday, the Joe Pride-trained gelding might be able to find a way back into the winner’s stall. He was only fair in the Gosford Cup last outing but the way the four-year-old stuck on suggested that he may have just needed the run. Amica is the other who could run a cheeky race at odds, while Looks Like Elvis and Polly Grey are the two class runners.

Race 8 – Benchmark 88 (1500m)

Selections: 9-11-8-5

Another race that is wide open is the penultimate race of the day, a Benchmark 88 over 1500m. Again, we are going wide and backing Kristen Buchanan’s six-year-old gelding Jazzland at the $31 quote. The son of Home On the Grange flies first-up, is unbeaten at 1500m and does his best racing on dry tracks, so the improving Soft 5 will be perfect. The gelding trialled superbly on May 13, beating Bargain and Rondinella over 1200m in a jog, so he should be forward enough to go first-up at 1500m. From the inside alley under Mikayla Weir, the pair will go forward and can tough it out on speed with the rail out 3m.

Best ValueRace 8 – Jazzland (#9) $31 with Neds

Race 9 – Benchmark 78 (1800m)

Selections: 5-6-7-1

We have another benchmark race to end the day, and again, it is a wide betting race. Steely was our on top pick when he won at Hawkesbury in a similar race last start, so we aren’t jumping off the big grey. The Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou-trained son of All Too Hard pulled away at the end of 1500m last time out, so the rise to 1800m should suit. Steely does have to carry an extra 2.5kg, but he gains the services of Tim Clark which is advantageous from barrier three. Here’s hoping Steely can win three straight.
