2021 Golden Slipper Day racing preview

A massive day of racing at Rosehill Gardens beckons this Saturday with five Group 1 races headlined by the richest two-year-old race in the world, the Golden Slipper. With torrential rain battering the New South Wales coast, there is a literal dark cloud hanging over the meeting. The track was rated a Soft 7 on Thursday morning, but experts are tipping it to start a Heavy 10. The rail is out +3m for the entire course, and the first race is set to jump at 12:30pm. HorseBetting.com.au brings you our top four in every race on Golden Slipper Day, including best bets, value bets, suggested quaddie numbers, and full previews for all five Group 1 races.

Race 1 – IRRESISTIBLE POOLS & SPAS DARBY MUNRO STAKES (1200m)

NEXT BEST BET

A field of 11 three-year-olds are set to go around in the opening race of the day. Queensland filly Isotope comes into this first up after she fell in the 3YO Magic Millions Guineas, while Private Eye resumes and is shooting for six straight victories. Doubtland is undefeated on wet tracks and when second up, and there is plenty of speed in the race to set it up for him to finish over the top. With James McDonald jumping on board, he gets all the boxes ticked in what is an open race.

Selections: 2-5-9-1

Next BestRace 1 – Doubtland (#2) $5.50 with Sportsbet

Race 2 – XXXX N E MANION CUP (2400m)

BEST BET

It might be time to pack up and go home after the second race with pockets filled to the brim and the Armaguard van escorting us out of the TAB if we can get our two best bets home early. Four-year-old Victorian mare Realm Of Flowers gets everything to suit in her second Sydney start, and we are confident she will make the most of it. With three wins and three minor placings from nine wet-track runs, the So You Think mare will relish the conditions. The 2400m is a massive plus, and her wide barrier will see her slot in off the speed before chiming in at the right time. With just 53kg, she has every right to win this. Her last start was huge where she flashed late behind Yonkers, and her second in the Sandown Cup in the spring was luckless. Bet, bet, bet!

Selections: 12-5-4-2

Best BetRace 2 – Realm Of Flowers (#12) $10 with Sportsbet

Race 3 – TAB BIRTHDAY CARD STAKES (1200m)

Written Beauty comes out of a brutally run Challenge Stakes where she put in a career-worst display. Nature Strip and Eduardo paired off and nothing else made an impact on two sprinters who were in another postcode as they broke the Randwick 1000m track record, so we are happy to forgive the three-year-old filly. Drawn out in barrier nine under Tommy Berry, she will cruise over and find the front and should be able to go on with the job. She has won on a Soft track and placed second on Heavy going when on debut at the Gold Coast behind The Drinks Cart. Wayupinthesky is another mare who goes well second up and loves the mud, so she is the danger.

Selections: 4-8-13-10

Race 4 – RANVET STAKES (2000m)

Despite it being a five-horse Group 1 field, the 2021 Ranvet Stakes is going to be one of the races of the day. Verry Elleegant and Addeybb are set to do battle for the second time in their career, with the UK import out to maintain his unbeaten Australian record. We are with the seven-time Group 1 winner Verry Elleegant to turn the tables this time. Drawn in barrier three, she will play the stalking roll and can be the one charging through the line late now that she is third up. Addeybb simply swims, which will make him hard to run down. No bet in the race for us here – just sit back, grab the popcorn and get ready for a mouth-watering contest.

Selections: 4-1-2-5

Race 5 – SKY RACING ROSEHILL GUINEAS (2000m)

Mo’unga was a good thing beaten in the Randwick Guineas a fortnight ago when he flashed late to just miss to Lion’s Roar. Before that, the Annabel Neasham-trained colt was great first up in the CS Hayes behind Tagaloa and Aysar over 1400m. He looks to have been crying out for 2000m his entire career, and he finally gets his chance in the 2021 Rosehill Guineas this weekend. The son of Savabeel has won on a Heavy track before and is bred to swim, so he look like one of the better bets of the day. Lion’s Roar is a deserved second-favourite, while The Elanora can improve up to 2000m.

Selections: 3-1-5-11

Race 6 – THE AGENCY GEORGE RYDER STAKES (1500m)

It has been 77 weeks since ‘The Big A’ has tasted victory, but this looks to be Avilius’ race to lose. After nearly getting the spoils first up behind Verry Elleegant and Colette in the Chipping Norton Stakes, he gets the conditions to suit on Saturday in the 2021 George Ryder Stakes. Unbeaten on Heavy tracks, the James Cummings-trained seven-year-old will be tucked away on the fence from the inside alley under Nash Rawiller before bursting through late. Arcadia Queen has had some feet issues and the wet track is a slight query, but the rumour is she will be scratched come Saturday anyway, while Gem Song can frank the form out of the Newcastle Newmarket.

Selections: 2-5-3-7

Race 7 – LONGINES GOLDEN SLIPPER (1200m)

The feature race of the afternoon is the 2021 Golden Slipper for the two-year-olds over 1200m. Profiteer looks the best horse in the race and has had a near-perfect campaign in preparation for this. His on-pace racing pattern should work a treat, and he has won on a Soft track over 1100m. He was a month between runs into the Todman Stakes and just got caught late, so with added fitness he can lead all of the way. Another who we can rest assured will relish the conditions and see out the six furlongs is O’president. Looking to make it three straight on the back of his win in the Skyline Stakes, the Chris Waller prospect will go forward and be in it for a very long way under Glen Boss.

Selections: 2-10-8-3

Race 8 – BISLEY WORKWEAR GALAXY (1100m)

The last Group 1 of the day is The Galaxy over 1100m, and it is $5 the field. Untapped four-year-old mare Tailleur has had ‘Group 1 winner’ written all over her since day dot, and she finally gets her chance on Saturday. With just 51kg on her back, a nice barrier (7) and better form in the wet than most fish, she is in this up to her eyeballs. There has been plenty of money come for her since it was confirmed she would start, and we are confident the money will be right come 5pm Saturday. Haut Brion Her has trialled well in preparation for this first-up assignment, while Wild Ruler will be there for a long way.

Selections: 13-4-11-1
[rmOC_events_list event_ids=1363923_08]

Race 9 – ROADWORK SOLUTIONS EPONA STAKES (1900m)

BEST VALUE BET

Just for something different, we have a tough race to conclude the day. If the track is going to be as wet as predicted, come race nine it will be very choppy and the best mudlark is going to have to come to the fore. Attention Run races very well fresh and does her best work on Heavy tracks. The wide draw in gate 12 might not be a disadvantage come this time in the afternoon, as she will get back and come wide to find the better part of the track. Polly Grey is probably the best wet tracker in the race, but she is well found towards the top of the market given she has drawn the carpark.

Selections: 9-5-7-6

Best ValueRace 9 – Attention Run (#9) $10 with Sportsbet
