Quaddie

QUADDIE punters have it good this Saturday at Rosehill where the quality of racing action is top shelf.

The opening leg of the quaddie kicks off at 1.15pm with the Gloaming Stakes which features the likes of Group 1 Champagne Stakes winner Prized Icon, and also last start winners Swear and High Mist.

The action continues with the Golden Pendant which marks the return of First Seal from an injury-enforced spell. The John Thompson-trained mare has a stellar record of beating Winx and its spring hopes look good this season.

The Shannon Stakes is the third leg of the quaddie and a quality rating 85 sprint ends the day on a high note.

Race 1 – Schweppes Gloaming Stakes (1800m)

Prized Icon ended its previous campaign with a win in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes, but its last two efforts have been only fair. The James Cummings-trained colt is dropping back to its own age group after running sixth behind Hartnell last start, so consider it here at $3.40.

Swear is an unbeaten colt which flashed home late to win on debut before holding off subsequent winner and race-rival High Mist last start. The Hawkes-trained son of Redoute’s Choice has plenty of upside and its breeding suggests it should continue to rise through the grades. Stepping up to 1800m at its third run isn’t easy to do, but the $4.60 suggests it’s a winning chance.

High Mist was listed as Hugh Bowman’s horse to watch this spring and although he can’t partner the three-year-old here, it’s still a great winning chance. The Chris Waller-trained colt won well at Warwick Farm last after some luckless runs in quality-graded races so it must be included in quaddie bets at $4.

Leg 1 quaddie tips: 1, 2, 3

Leg 2 – Ronald McDonald House Golden Pendant (1400m)

First Seal opened at $3.50 and has been well backed into $3.30 after trainer John Thompson said it’s the best it has ever been. The five-year-old mare is having its first run since the Doncaster Handicap in April where it finished 12th, but it has had its fair share of injury problems and by all accounts it’s good to go for this. Looks tough to beat if it come race fit.

Tycoon Tara hasn’t done much wrong for Peter and Paul Snowden since arriving at the stables. The Written Tycoon mare won back-to-back which included the Missile Stakes when beating the likes of Rebel Dane and Capitalist. It finished fourth behind Mackintosh last start, but it was fighting on well and the $7 is a good each way price.

Heavens Above showed its class last start in the Sheraco Stakes on this track. The Tim Martin-trained mare charged home to score on the line and despite the rise in class for this, there was plenty of improvement to come out of that run. The money has come for it at $5.50 and it should go close again.

Leg 2 quaddie tips: 1, 2, 5

Leg 3 – Shannon Stakes (1500m)

Hi World is an enigmatic type which continues to burn punters, but it flashed home late at Flemington last start and the change of scenery might help its chances. The Freedman-trained horse hasn’t been able to show its best since arriving in Australia, but it would be better suited on a heavy track where it’s unbeaten in two starts. This isn’t the strongest field, so bookmakers have kept it safe at $3.30.

The run of Old North last start was too bad to be true. The John O’Shea-trained horse won the Tulloch Stakes last campaign before running second in the Packer Plate, but its last start ninth in the Theo Marks was very average. The four-year-old might have needed the fresh up run so we’ll allow for the flop and expect a much better effort at $4.20 in this.

Caped Crusader is twice a winner second-up and it showed positive signs when second at Rosehill last start. The Waterhouse/Bott-trained gelding finished only a length behind Moral Victory and the quick rise up in distance should suit. It has placed three times on this track and a win is long overdue. Chance at $6 after opening at $6.50.

Leg 3 quaddie tips: 4, 5, 7

Leg 4 – Hyland Race Colours R85 (1400m)

The win of Invinzabeel last start should be respected here despite the gelding rising up in grade. It won by 1.5 lengths over the capable Dinghu Mountain and it was the win of a horse of the improve. Chris Waller trains the five-year-old which has yet to miss a placing in six starts at this distance so consider here at $5.

Bullrush went to Rosehill a fortnight back unbeaten from five starts, but the winning streak ended at that. The Hawkes-trained gelding could manage only fifth behind Moral Victory, but it should be fitter for the run and give itself a winning chance in the straight. $7 is a very nice price for a quality type.

Include both Extensible and Dinghu Mountain which have the quality to win here and have both been well backed in the market.

Leg 4 quaddie tips: 3, 7, 10, 13
