HorseBetting’s New South Wales form analyst has previewed the 10-race meeting at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday and brings you his best bet in the January Cup, along with his best bets, value bet and free quaddie numbers. The track is rated a Heavy 8, with the rail in the true position for the entire course. Race 1 is set to jump at 12:25pm AEDT.
Listed January Cup Best Bet – Pecuniary Interest
Winning form is good form, and that is exactly what John Sargent’s five-year-old Pecuniary Interest brings to this race on Saturday. The son of Excelebration has only recently some on to the scene at metropolitan level, winning his past two starts at Randwick over 1600m and 2000m respectively in Midway races. The gelding has been thrown into the deep end here, lining up in his first Listed race, but he should relish having to carry only 53kg under James Innes Jr. In his past two starts, this in-form galloper has got a fair way back in the run and has been able to pick the runs through the field and burst through late, so there’s no doubt Innes will be trying to recreate his two wins this preparation from barrier four. If he gets a cozy run behind the speed, he can threaten late this stayer on the up.
Rosehill’s Best Bet Of The Day – Steplee
It’s not too often we are keen on betting in these Highway races, especially on a Heavy 8 track, but it is hard to not be impressed with what we have seen from Steplee in his three starts to date. The Rodney Northam-trained four-year-old is out of Marlee Dancer, a half-sister to Country Championships winner, Artlee, so he has some strong genes. In his first career start back in June, this son of Sidestep chased hard to run second at Muswellbrook, before winning by 3.6 lengths at his next start at Scone on a Heavy 8 surface. Northam then took him to Muswellbrook once again, where this time he proved too good, coming from second last on the turn to win by 1.5 lengths over 1500m. James McDonald is booked to ride, which is a massive advantage in any race, and barrier 11 is going to allow him to stay out of trouble and get back early, before running home strongly. Hopefully 1200m doesn’t prove too sharp for him in his first-up run.
Next Best Bet – Rule Of Law
Bjorn Baker and Jenny Duggan combine in the sixth with promising sprinter, Rule Of Law. This four-year-old son of Snitzel has won his last two starts in good fashion at Warwick Farm, and now looks very well placed to take his career to the next level. In early 2021, the Baker-trained gelding raced behind Rocketing By, Prime Star and Equation, which is very handy form for this sort of race, which he has already franked by staying undefeated this campaign. In both runs, Rule Of Law has been up on the pace before kicking into sixth gear to race away and win by 1.35 lengths and 3 lengths respectively. Jenny Duggan is back in the saddle for Saturday’s assignment, which is advantageous as she can claim 2kg, bringing his weight down to a neat 60kg. He has drawn out in barrier 13, but he will take bad luck out of the equation by leading, which will make him very hard to stop in his quest for a hattrick.
Best Value At Rosehill – Darleb
The $5.50 on offer doesn’t exactly scream value, but Darleb could arguably be half that quote in this race after winning three straight. the Kris Lees-trained galloper won a Benchmark 75 at the Sunshine Coast on November 20, where he defeated subsequent winners Moonan Me, Smart Meteor, Dune Forty Five and Better Than Groovy, in what has been a very good form race. The five-year-old entire then backed it up at the Sunshine Coast on December 5, before heading back to his home track at Newcastle on December 18 to win by the narrowest of margins in the Summer Provincial Series Final over 1600m. Lees has opted to drop him back to 1400m which is his pet distance (9:3-3-1), while he finds himself in a race that isn’t overly strong, despite a couple of handy gallopers. He will get back from the outside alley under Bowman, but he has been finishing his races off very well, so there is no reason why he can’t do it again.
