Rockhampton hosts a rare Wednesday meeting for the club’s first meeting of 2021. A cracking nine race card has been assembled, which is set to kick off at 12:25pm. The track is rated a soft 5, with the rail in the true position.
Best Bet – Race 6 #2 Moreno
Wayne Pomfrett’s classy four-year-old gelding, Moreno had his colours lowered for the first time in five starts when he went down to I Did It Again at Mackay three weeks ago. Formerly trained by Chris Waller in Sydney, the son of Charm Spirit has grown a new leg in his new life in North Queensland. Having drawn gate 4 with Elyce Smith aboard, he’ll sit on the leader’s back and should be far too good here over the 1050m. He has placed twice on soft tracks before, which includes a second to Edison who recently won back-to-back metropolitan races, so he should handle the drying track. He looks a stand out on what is a tricky card.

Sunshine Coast trainer, Garnett Taylor will be hoping his impressive record at Rockhampton will be the secret to success with three-year-old maiden galloper, Back When. The son of Unusual Suspect has had two races for two seconds, including a 1L loss to I Am Swerving at Eagle Farm, and a 0.8L defeat to Poupee at the Sunshine Coast. Taylor has great success at this track, striking at 43% in the last year, and also fires when Ryan Wiggins rides his horses (19%). From the inside alley, expect a forward showing and a strong finish.

Best Value – Race 7 #5 Bantu Bay
Lyle Rowe saddles up his consistent galloper, Bantu Bay for the first time this campaign in a 1050m Class 3. The four-year-old beat race favourite, Bold Hunter at this track in March and he meets him 4kg better here, so he has that big advantage in his favour. From barrier 8 under Nathan Day, he’ll get back and be hitting the line strongly out under the arches. Bantu Bay raced well without winning last campaign and has runs on the board against Chezblack and I Did It Again, which is top-notch Central Queensland form especially for a race of this caliber. We would be shocked if Bantu Bay is not placed here.
