Rockhampton preview

What Rockhampton Races
Where Callaghan Park Racecourse – Reaney St, North Rockhampton QLD 4701
When Sunday, June 25, 2023
First Race 12pm AEST

Racing returns to Rockhampton this Sunday afternoon for a competitive eight-race card – the second meeting at Callaghan Park in the space of three days. With no rain on the forecast for Friday and Saturday, we expect the entire meeting to be run on the current Good 4 track rating. The rail stays in the true position after Friday’s seven-race meeting, so expect the track to chop up as the day goes on. The first race is set to kick things off at 12pm AEST.

Best Bet at Rockhampton: Rovers Pepper

The Clinton Taylor-trained Rovers Pepper will be seeking his fourth-straight victory when he lines up in the Tatts Gold Cup Open Handicap, coming off a dominant 3.4-length victory at this track over 1400m on June 2. This four-year-old gelding has won six of his seven starts this preparation, going through the grades from a Maiden Handicap to now take on an Open Handicap at his 12th career start. This son of No Nay Never has an average winning margin of 3.3 lengths over his last three starts at Rockhampton, where he is unbeaten in four runs. Montana Philpot rode this guy to a 5.4-length victory three starts ago, and with the aid of her 2kg claim, Rovers Pepper will be hard to beat while lugging just 53kg.

Best Bet

Race 8 – Silk #8 Rovers Pepper (5)

4yo Gelding | T: Clinton Taylor | J: Montana Philpot (a2) (55kg)

Next Best at Rockhampton: Goldschlager

The Jared Wehlow-trained Goldschlager finished second behind Rovers Pepper on her stable debut, going down by 3.4 lengths; however, she beat the third horse by 9.5 lengths. With this daughter of Deep Field staying in Benchmark 70 grade and now taking on her own sex, she gets into this race very well with only 55.5kg. Although she has only won two races and has 12 placings from her 26 starts, she has been racing at metropolitan grade for most of her career. Dropping back to provincial grade and coming off a good performance last start, expect Goldschlager to play a prominent role in the finish.

Next Best Again at Rockhampton: Thorsby

The last of three maidens to be run on Sunday will feature the Ashley Perks-trained Thorsby, who is coming off a fourth-place finish at the Sunshine Coast first-up over 1000m on June 11. The three-year-old gelding was made to sit three wide for the entirety of the 1000m journey, and even with the torrid run, he stuck on well to finish just outside the placings. This son of Redoute’s Choice drops back from metropolitan grade, where he had his first five starts, to now race in provincial grade for the first time. If Thorsby can perform at the same level as he has in town, he should go very close to breaking his maiden at his sixth start.

Next Best Again

Race 3 – Silk #2 Thorsby (9)

3yo Gelding | T: Ashley Perks | J: Montana Philpot (a2) (58.5kg)

$2.50 with Neds
