Rockhampton racing preview – March 25, 2021

Eight races will be run and won at Rockhampton’s Callaghan Park Racecourse on Thursday afternoon. While the Beef Capital has had some heavy rain over the last few days like the rest of the eastern seaboard, we can be confident that this meeting will go ahead on a Soft 7 or better with the rail out +8m for the entire circumference of the course. HorseBetting.com.au brings you the best bets, value picks and recommended quaddie numbers for Thursday’s meeting, which jumps at 12:57pm local time.

Best Bet: Avocado Sunset

Avocado Sunset has been racing in terrific fashion his last two, winning by a combined 2.5 lengths at Mackay and Rockhampton respectively. He won two trials prior to his first-up run this campaign by nearly 10 lengths and then went to Murwillumbah on a Heavy 10 and finished third. He was then sent back north, where he led all of the way in both starts and justified his favouritism in style. Drawn in barrier six under Ashley Butler, he will go straight to the front and be too good for them again. He won on a Soft 7 two starts back, and the rail being out 8m is likely to suit those on-speed runners. The runner-up in his most recent outing looks hard to beat later on in the card too, and those two cleared out from the third horse last start, so we are happy to back Avocado Sunset here.

Next Best: Isis Brumby

That horse we touched on briefly who finished second to Avocado Sunset at this track 10 days ago is Kevin Miller’s Isis Brumby. The three-year-old son of Spill The Beans chased hard over the 1050m and put up a margin of 3.5 lengths back to the third horse, so we are keen to follow him in this as he steps up to 1200m. Brisbane hoop James Orman has gone to Rockhampton for a handful of rides, with this looking to be one of his better bookings for the day. Drawn in barrier 10, he will have enough early speed to cross and find the plastic and get back into the winner’s stall. This will be his first run on a rain-affected track, but his breeding suggests he should handle it well enough to win this.

Best Value: Spring Creek

Jim O’Shea and Chris Whiteley combine with one of Rockhmapton’s pin-up girls, Spring Creek, in the feature Open Handicap over 1400m. The six-year-old Captain Sonador mare was brilliant first up, getting a long way back off the speedy Lepreezy over the 1050m trip before flashing late to go down in a close photo finish. Up to 1400m looks ideal despite the fact she hasn’t won over that trip in eight starts. Second up, however, she has won three of her five runs and finished in the minor placings the other two times. From the outside alley, Whiteley will take the consistent mare forward and find a spot in the first couple of runners with cover. The Soft track will suit, and we could see her finishing over the top.

Best ValueRace 7 – Spring Creek (#4) $7.50 with Sportsbet
