First Race 12:12pm AEST

A big weekend of racing awaits Rockhampton for the Capricorn Yearling Sales, kicking off with nine races on Friday afternoon. The track is rated a Soft 6 but could improve by race day, while the rail will be set in the true position for the entire circumference of the course. HorseBetting.com.au’s Queensland analyst has done the form and delivers to you his best bets and quaddie numbers for the meeting, which will jump at 12:12pm local time.

Best Bet: Demurral

Glenda Bell and Elyce Smith combine in the seventh with talented gelding Demurral. The son of Not A Single Doubt has won three from seven and is looking for four straight wins on Friday. The four-year-old won by 2.5 lengths at Mackay back in January and has had a sense of timing about him with month-long gaps between runs. His most recent win came on April 3 at Emerald with Smith in the saddle. From gate nine, Demurral should get a soft run behind what shapes to be a moderate tempo and can finish over the top of them yet again.

Next Best: Legal Chance

Legal Chance was a dominant last-start winner despite the margin only being a quarter of a length. The three-year-old son of Legal Chance settled in the box seat under Nathan Thomas and got the split 200m from home to win going away from them. Up to 1400m looks the logical next step for this Lyle Rowe-trained gelding given he has often looked outgunned over the sprint trips. Barrier two is perfect for apprentice Marnu Potgieter, as he can box seat again on the back of a slow speed and then put them away late with only 52kg.

Best Value: Takings

Mick & Christine Dore saddle up their eight-year-old gelding Takings in a 1500m Open Handicap. The son of Show A Heart resumed in January off a two-year break and is now fifth up and rising to a suitable 1500m trip. The old timer ran a credible third to Spring Creek last time out over 1400m, with Daunting Queen running second. Takings meets Daunting Queen 1.5kg better off at the weights this time, which should be enough to turn the tables, and he maps to do no work from barrier one under Nathan Thomas. There is no speed in this race, so we expect Takings to lead and be very hard to run down.
