Reginae shocks More Sundays at Randwick
Reginae has caused an upset as heavy race favourite More Sundays disappointed in his Randwick debut.
More Sundays, the $2 favourite, failed to fire in the ATC Heritage Society Handicap (1300m) after his impressive first-up win at Geelong, with Reginae powering to the post to score by 1-1/2 lengths on Saturday.
The three-year-old filly, backed into $9 after opening at $15, has impressed trainer Kris Lees after scoring a maiden win at Kembla Grange two weeks ago.
“She was really good on her first-up run this preparation,” Lees said on Reginae.
“She trained on the right way. I thought it was a really strong race on paper.
“It was a terrific ride from Corey (Brown) with that good gate.”
Lees is setting Reginae for big things.
“She’s really bombproof. She’s a filly with a lot of upside and she’s got a bright future,” he said.
“She’s a bit of sleeper. She’s got a terrific attitude. She’s always shown us that we can get her out to a mile.
“She’s probably looking at some of the better races down the track.”
James Cummins-trained duo Condemned ($21) and Rainer ($7.5) stormed home to round out the placings.
More Sundays was second on the turn but fell back in the field to finish seventh.
