Redzel romps home in The Shorts as Everest approaches

REDZEL’S preparations for October’s inaugural running of The Everest look ideally placed after the five-year-old took out the Group Two The Shorts at Randwick.

The short-priced favourite ($2.50 at WilliamHill.com.au) – which was hunting for its fourth-straight win – was raced up on the speed by Hugh Bowman, and the champion jockey eventually presented the horse at the 200m and it dutifully kicked away to record another commanding win.

Redzel finished ahead of Ball Of Muscle ($2.40 at Crownbet.com.au) and Nieta which closed out well to return $3.50 at Sportsbet.com.au.

Hugh Bowman said in the aftermath of the win that Redzel is a true contender in the first-ever running of The Everest.

“In my opinion he is a genuine Everest hopeful this horse,” Bowman said.

“They have worked out exactly how he likes to race, he can set a good pace as you saw today and he can sustain a fight.”

Bowman said the horse is “the most improved sprinter” in Australia, and would gladly take The Everest ride aboard the five-year-old if the opportunity presented itself.

“He is a fit horse, has residual fitness from Brisbane and is the most improved sprinter in the country.

“He won’t run further than 1200m but he is a group one winner at the distance and I would love to be on him in the Everest if Kerrin is not available.”

The Group Two The Shorts crown added another group win to Redzel’s already sparkling record as attention now shifts to October’s feature event.

Peter Snowdon said Redzel will be a genuine threat in the race given the improvement it shows throughout its career.

“He has come a long way this bloke,” Snowdon said.

“It has all been about what he has done himself. He has learned how to race properly. He is very very genuine. He never makes a mistake.

“He races on pace, on wet tracks, dry tracks, carries weight well, he’s just the real deal now.”

Snowdon said the team has been flexible throughout the preparation, which has meant Redzel will have the best possible chance at taking out the $10 million feature.

“With the preparation we changed tack when we got the whisper we we’re going to get an Everest slot.

“He is very effective off a month, three week to a month break. That is just perfect for this horse to race at his best.

“The Moir was going to be the plan with the Concorde then the Shorts but when we got wind about this we thought we’d run him this week then four weeks until the Everest so time wise it’s perfect to have him right.

“(We are hoping) the plan comes off.”
