PETER and Paul Snowdon’s domination of the big races has continued after Redzel controlled the race from the front and finished hard to claim the Group One Doomben 10,000, returning $7.70 via

Redzel looked to be wilting at the 400m mark but found an extra gear in the closing stages to hold out a fast-finishing Counterattack ($2.50 at and the surging Derryn ($3.10 at, which made up fantastic ground from the back of the field to deliver a dividend for place players.

It was a disappointing run from Redzel’s stablemate and $3.50 market leader at Russian Revoultion.
The favourite had every opportunity to get off the leader’s back and stake its claim for victory but failed mount a challenge to the leading trio to finish a disappointing fourth.

There was no denying Redzel however, which finally delivered on the big stage to register a maiden G1 win.
Jockey Jim Byrne said he was confident the horse could hit the line strongly if he could maintain the horse’s composure heading into the latter stages of the race.

“I knew coming to the turn passing the 400m if he could hold it together a little bit longer he was going to make it a little bit difficult (for the chasers),” Byrne said.

“It was a good effort by him.”
