Redemption on the cards for Suncraze in Highway Handicap
THERE aren’t many horses in Australia that can boast five successive second place finishes, but Suncraze is searching to go one better this Saturday.
The Melanie O’Gorman-trained three-year-old has had the misfortune of running second in five of its six career starts and it looked well-placed last start at Newcastle, but a poor ride saw it beaten again.
Redemption could be on the cards this Saturday in the Highway Handicap at Warwick Farm where punters will no doubt be backing in the gelding again and O’Gorman is hoping it can receive a change of luck.
“I’m really happy with him, he’s pulled up well and I’m looking forward to seeing him on Saturday,” O’Gorman told HorseBetting.com.au.
Suncraze has attracted attention for having the ability to show a big turn-of-foot from the back of the field, but jockey Grant Buckley had it far too close to the pace last start which set it up for a back marker to finish over the top.
“It wasn’t my plan to have him so close. The horse is a back marker and I’ve always said to not change that,” O’Gorman said. “I like the way he races, I like that style and I think that suits him.
“I didn’t expect him to be so close turning for home, but in saying that he horse that beat him (Cosmic Engine) has come out and won in Sydney so the form has been consistent and very strong.”
This will be its first try at Warwick Farm and O’Gorman believes the experience will benefit the quality three-year-old.
“He has to learn to cope with different tracks and I think Warwick Farm should suit him more than a track like Canterbury,” she said.
Corey Brown takes over the riding from Grant Buckley and his experience could make a difference.
“I’ve known Corey for years and I’m looking forward to him riding for me,” O’Gorman added.
