Best Bet: Marway

As the saying goes, Rocky form is the best form! Ex-Rockhampton sprinter Marway has made New South Wales his own, winning four of his six starts, including a last-start demolition victory in the Wagga Town Plate. The son of Hemingway does drop back from 1200m to the 1100m, which is short of his best, but the fact that he will lead and streak clear makes the Mark Newnham-trained gelding very hard to go past with only 53.5kg and Rachel King on his back. While Marway now takes on some genuine city-class horses on a Saturday, the way he has been winning races suggests he will hold his own here. The $2.70 with Aussie betting sites appeals.

Best BetRace 6 – Marway (#8) $2.70 with Sportsbet

Next Best: April Rain

Hindsight is wonderful, isn’t it? Truth be told, we probably went a run too soon with April Rain given that she was first-up off two pretty easy trials. Racing at Gosford wasn’t going to suit her pattern, but even still, class nearly got her home as she went down by only 0.3 lengths after coming from last. Now second-up, out to 1300m, down 1kg in weight and on to a track where she has tasted victory before, we expect this Pierro mare to go one better this time under Tommy Berry. With three wins and two seconds from five career starts, we are confident April Rain will add another victory to her tally at start six.

Best Value: True Detective

One we have plenty of time for is Lost And Running, so the fact that True Detective got within 2.25 lengths of that horse last time suggests he is going OK. The four-year-old son of Shamus Award was quite plain first-up but ran miles better last time out when he settled closer. The Chris Waller-trained gelding did look like he was going to be a pretty good horse early in his career, winning two of his first four career starts, but he has not really gone on with it and is now 11 months without a win. Louise Day will do the riding here from barrier 13, and thanks to her claim, True Detective is likely going to carry a mere 51kg. If Day takes this gelding forward from the wide alley, he can be in it for a long way.

Best ValueRace 8 – True Detective (#9) $9.50 with Sportsbet
