Listed Civic Stakes Best Bet – Race 6 #8 Threeood
Joe Pride’s stable has been flying of late, and the run can continue on Saturday when he saddles up classy mare Threeood in the Listed Civid Stakes. The five-year-old resumed with a solid third at any old price at Eagle Farm over 1200m and has trialled since, cruising to an easy four length victory. Now, back to Sydney and on a very suitable Heavy 8 track, the daughter of Star Witness looks ready to win second-up. She won the Belle of the Turf at Gosford on a Heavy 8 at the end of her last campaign at Group 3 level so we expect her to relish the same conditions albeit at Listed level. The $7 appeals strongly.
Threeood (#8)Best Bet – Race 3 #1 Sweet Thomas
Sweet Thomas will be looking to make it back-to-back wins in the 3200m Stayer’s Cup after a good effort when third in the Brisbane Cup a fortnight ago over the same distance. The nine-year-old gelding really only gets warm over two miles, so the Heavy 8 conditions will make this a genuine staying test – the same conditions he won this race in 12 months ago. Brenton Avdulla will partner the Matthew Smith-trained gelding from barrier six which should see him settle in the back half of the field and be able to cruise into the race better than anything else despite the big weight.
Sweet Thomas (#1)Next Best – Race 7 #10 Great House
Brenton Avdulla looks set for a big afternoon with a number of handy rides, including Great House. The Chris Waller-trained four-year-old has won three of his seven career starts, including a very narrow victory in dogged fashion first-up over 1500m at Rosehill on a Soft 6. The son of Galileo now rises to 1800m which will suit, as will the Heavy 8 conditions that are on the cards. The up and coming stayer is well weighted here, dropping 2.5kg from his first-up victory in this Benchmark 88. There is enough speed to set it up for a horse like this who will jump from barrier six and be charging home late. He will be a horse to follow in some nice staying races in the coming months.
Great House (#10)Best Value – Race 2 #14 Zoo Station $11
Gayna Williams’ lightly raced four-year-old mare Zoo Station makes her city debut in a winnable 1400m Highway race. The daughter of Animal Kingdom has had four starts for two wins and two minor placings and shoots for a hattrick of wins albeit with a 20-week spell in between. Kath Bell-Pitomac has ridden her in all four starts so far, but city rider Regan Bayliss will take over the duties in this run. She has drawn a touch wide in barrier 10, but the mare’s adaptable racing pattern will allow her to settle wherever she is most comfortable and still be effective late. The two-time winner has won on a Soft surface in the past, so there is no indication that she won’t handle the Heavy track. This is to her liking.
