Spring Champions Stakes Day betting preview

It’s Spring Champion Stakes Day in Sydney on Saturday, with nine races to be run out of Royal Randwick. A strong undercard includes the Roman Consul, Stan Fox, Silver Eagle and Angst Stakes. The track is rated in the good range, with the rail out +4m from the 2000m to 1600m and then +6m for the remainder. The first jumps at 12:10pm AEDT.

Best BetRace 2 – Wild Ruler (#1) $2.50 with Sportsbet

Wild Ruler looks primed to win again here at Group 2 level in the 1200m Roman Consul Stakes. He was a tough first-up winner in the Heritage Stakes and will strip fitter here second up. James McDonald stays aboard again and will give him every chance, likely from the first half of the field out of barrier six. He only has four opponents and we think Doubtland’s form isn’t quite good enough after beating an average bunch in Melbourne last start. Wild Ruler should win this and potentially pick up the last Everest slot.

Next BestRace 6 – Alligator Blood (#1) $1.80 with Sportsbet

No prizes for finding him, but we are in the corner of Queensland champ Alligator Blood once again. He will be much better for his first-up run and steps up to 1300m, which will suit him down to the ground. From barrier five, Ryan Maloney will either sit outside the leader or dictate terms he looks to keep his mount’s unbeaten second-up record intact. The 58.5kg isn’t an issue at all for the big four-year-old by All Too Hard as they look to make it win number 10. He is short priced but should win it with no issue.

Best ValueRace 4 – Relucent (#11) $17 with Sportsbet

Kerrin McEvoy and Chris Waller combine in a weak Benchmark 78 race with last-start winner Relucent. He was very strong late when finishing over the top of the well-backed Cisco Bay at Canterbury over 1900m and should relish the step up to 2000m. Barrier two will be ideal, as they can just settle right on the back of the leaders and be strong again late. This horse was once a VRC Derby favourite and finished fourth in that race, so he has the class to win here and looks a huge chance each way.
