HorseBetting’s New South Wales form analyst brings you his best bets and quaddie picks for Royal Randwick’s 10-race program this Saturday, including a selection in the Listed Winter Stakes. The track is rated a Soft 7 and is expected to stay that way, while the rail is out 4m from the 2000m to the 1600m and out 6m for the remainder of the course. The first race is set to jump at 11am.
Winter Stakes Tip: Riodini
Former Kiwi runner Riodini has only had four Australian starts, and in that time he has been in the minor numbers twice, including a third in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap. The last time we saw this son of Proisir at the races, he finished five lengths off Colette in the Golden Eagle at Rosehill. With two trials – including a four-length win on the synthetic at Randwick – in the lead-up to his first-up assignment, the Waterhouse & Bott runner should be fit enough. The 1400m fresh should suit, and with Tim Clark onboard from barrier four he is going to get every conceivable chance.

Randwick Best Bet: Maddi Rocks
Admittedly, this four-year-old mare is an enigma and always promises plenty without really delivering, but after a super trial on June 8th, we added her to our blackbook and have to side with her first-up. The daughter of Fastnet Rock has had a change of trainers, leaving the Chris Waller yard to join John O’Shea, who was quick to enact changes by adding blinkers for the first time. From barrier eight, we expect the blinkers to allow Maddi Rocks to be further forward than usual and still have plenty of dash late over the 1100m. She can return to the winner’s stall in this.
Race 4 – Maddi Rocks (#2)[rmOC_events_list event_ids=1374039_04]
Next Best at Randwick: Harpo Marx
Bjorn Baker will combine with Rachel King in the fifth – a Benchmark 78 over 2000m – with Harpo Marx. The five-year-old son of Galileo has been knocking on the door in both runs this time in, finishing fifth and fourth respectively. First-up he charged home from the back over an unsuitable 1500m trip to finish only five lengths behind Oscar Zulu, who has won again since. Just seven days ago, the gelding got a long way back and ran on strongly again over 1800m behind Steely, Lackeen and Wicklow, so rising to 2000m and stepping back to what looks an easier race should be enough for this quality stayer to get back into the winner’s circle. He is a genuine Metropolitan Handicap horse.
Race 5 – Harpo Marx (#3)[rmOC_events_list event_ids=1374039_05]
Randwick Value Bet: Sky Command
The way that trainer Gary Portelli praised this filly after a dominant debut win at Warwick Farm on June 30th had us expecting to see her open very short wherever she started next, so the $6.50 on offer looks very appealing. The two-year-old daughter of Deep Field led throughout over 1100m before surging clear to win by over 2.5 lengths on a Heavy 9. Brenton Avdulla retains the ride, and from barrier 11 we expect the pair to cross over and look for the front. In the wet conditions, Sky Command could prove extremely hard to run down. Portelli has her penned as a Group 1 filly in waiting, so a 2YO Handicap should be well within her grasp.
