What Randwick Races
Where Royal Randwick Racecourse – Alison Rd, Randwick NSW 2031
When Saturday, January 21, 2023
First Race 12:20pm AEDT

Metropolitan racing heads to Royal Randwick Racecourse on Saturday afternoon for a strong 10-race program headlined by the Listed Carrington Stakes (1400m) with $160,000 up for grabs. The track is currently a Good 4; however, there is some rain around in Sydney leading into the weekend, so we’re prepared for a slight downgrade. The rail pushes out +3m the entire circuit, and early on we’ll be favouring the inside; then, as we get deeper into the card, we think it could be more beneficial to be a few pairs off the fence. The first race is set to get underway from 12:20pm AEDT.

Carrington Stakes: Looks Like Elvis

We’re with the class galloper in the 1400m feature on Saturday afternoon, as Looks Like Elvis appears ready to find the winner’s enclosure third-up. He was luckless last start at Flemington in the Chester Manifold Stakes on New Year’s Day and should’ve been winning with any cover throughout that contest; however, it never eventuated and the eight-year-old gelding had to settle for the minor money. The Jarrod Austin team has this guy going outstandingly well, and travelling to Randwick for this race looks to have him set up perfectly to be peaking. His form behind Corner Pocket reads well and the map he gets from barrier four looks ideal, with speed from Titanium Power and Vreneli setting it up for a horse that’ll stalk the hot tempo. Brett Prebble has been riding well since arriving in NSW, and you’re getting a cracking price with online bookmakers to be backing Looks Like Elvis in the Carrington Stakes.

Best Bet at Randwick: Almania

You’ll be getting close to double figures for the lightly raced seven-year-old Almania. His first-up effort behind Jojo Was A Man in a BM100 at Randwick on December 31 was enormous considering the circumstances. He was first-up off a 763-day spell, went back to last in a strung-out field and still had the audacity to storm home into third to only be beaten 1.5 lengths. He was going better with every stride and arguably would’ve won the race if there was an extra 100m, but unfortunately for backers you’d have to settle for the black book. He’s now second-up and should only improve with the run under his belt, while he steps back into BM88 company and should relish the 2000m. He only has to carry 56.5kg, too, with the inclusion of Victorian raider Helene Leadingstar, keeping us well in with the handicapper. Jason Collett takes the reins now and only needs to find cover mid-race to be right in this.

Next Best Bet: Bullfinch

Race nine is a BM88 over the 1600m and we think Bullfinch can finally get a well-deserved win on the board this preparation. He’s been a model of consistency for the Chris Waller yard, and while he’s been right around the minor money, he just hasn’t quite cracked a win. He’s found some nice horses like Jojo Was A Man and Nugget twice prior to that, so he’s been finding the line against the top-quality gallopers during the summer months. Now he drops in grade from his last-start performance and finds the appointment of James McDonald to make things a lot easier. From the soft gate, Bullfinch can finally get a perfect run to be saluting on Saturday.

Best Value Bet: Tazaral

Race eight is one of many competitive contests on the Randwick program; however, Tazaral from the Peter & Paul Snowden camp has really caught our eye. He’s a first-up Irish import, and despite only having the one career win to his name, his credentials read very strongly heading into a BM78 affair. Formerly trained by Dermot Weld for the iconic Aga Khan colours, Tazaral ran into Gear Up at Gowran Park in open company over 1902m to finish his campaign and looks to have arrived in Australia in terrific order. He’s had just the one official barrier trial for the new stable and it was very soft running into second at Randwick on January 9. You rarely see European imports travel up with the leaders, which showed us this Fastnet Rock gelding looks very forward heading into this first-up assignment. We’re expecting Kerrin McEvoy to do exactly what he produced at the trials and ride Tazaral forward and possibly find the one-by-one — and if he does, we think this guy is over the odds and the one to beat.
