2020 Railway Stakes betting preview
The Railway Stakes is the first of three Group 1 races over the three-week carnival at Ascot. This year’s edition has attracted a capacity field of 16 with the four emergencies on standby. Inspirational Girl has opened up favourite for the $1,000,000 feature at odds of $3.80 after taking out the Asian Beau Stakes three weeks ago and should be right in the finish.
Despite being beaten home by the race favourite when they clashed in the Asian Beau Stakes three weeks ago, Too Close The Sun has since gone on to bolt in at the Ascot Cup to solidify his chances here. He maps to be up on speed from the wide barrier and will benefit coming off the short seven-day break, considering how soft his last-start win was. The Lindsay Smith-trained gelding may shorten in price if conditions remain damp underfoot, as he is undefeated in four goes with the sting out of the track. He has also won four times on firmer tracks and is the clear danger to the market elect.
Speaking of the favourite, it’s hard to ignore the impressive record Inspirational Girl has put together so far. Trained by Grant and Alana Williams, the talented mare has won eight times from 10 starts and is yet to run outside of the top three in her career. As mentioned, she got the better of our top tip when they last met, producing the best last 400m sectional of the entire meeting. The runner-up on that day had excuses, and that is the only reason why this girl has been relegated to next best in our 2020 Railway Stakes betting tips.
It’s hard to get too enthusiastic about a galloper who hasn’t won for nearly three years, but Kementari is clearly one of the classier runners in the 2020 Railway Stakes field. This campaign he has been there or thereabouts outside of his effort in the Manikato Stakes, although he wasn’t beaten far on that occasion. He had plenty of excuses last time out in the Lee Steere Stakes at this track when trapped three wide with no cover, but he stuck on bravely for third. This time around he’s drawn the rails, and with a bit of luck, it’s hard not to see him being in the finish.
