Racing shorts: Costin to miss first group 1 of Sydney Autumn

Winona CostinWINONA Costin will miss the first group 1 meeting of the Sydney autumn carnival after she failed to gain a medical clearance to ride.

The apprentice was ruled out of the midweek meeting at Rosehill and Thursday’s provincial program at Hawkesbury after she failed a concussion test following a serious race fall at Canberra on Sunday.

She had hoped to be cleared to ride at Randwick on Saturday, but was ruled unfit by a Racing NSW doctor.

Costin had been booked for six mounts including Centre Pivot in the Chipping Norton Stakes.

She will undergo another medical assessment on Monday when she hopes to be given the green light to return to race riding.

James Orman all smiles after doing Mum a favour

Apprentice James Orman had an extra reason to smile when he reached 100 Queensland winners for the season in record time.

Orman rode the first winner at Ipswich on Mizuki for Stuart Kendrick and then landed the next on Carda Mojo for his mother Caroline Allardyce.

He is apprenticed to his mother at Gatton and she gave him his first metropolitan winner on Iniquity in July, 2014.

“They tell me it is a record and it was something special to do it for Mum,” Orman said.

Orman’s 100 winners came in less than seven months which was a week earlier than record holder champion Chris Munce set in 2011-12.

He will now set off after Munce’s state record of 155 winners.

Orman’s effort is all the more remarkable because he rarely rides for the top trainer Tony Gollan and only recently linked with the powerful Rob Heathcote stable.

Manny Gelagotis fined $2000 at inquiry

Racing manager Manny Gelagotis has been fined over comments he made on social media and in a radio interview in Queensland.

Racing Victoria stewards found Gelagotis guilty of improper or insulting language towards an official at an inquiry on Thursday and fined him $2000, $1000 of which has been suspended for 12 months.

Gelagotis, the racing manager for his brother Peter, was angered that Mourinho was allowed to start after being kicked behind the barriers before the CF Orr Stakes on February 13.

He vented his displeasure on Twitter and during an interview on TAB Radio.

After racing on the speed, Mourinho weakened in the straight and beat one runner home.

Gelagotis indicated that he will appeal the penalty to the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board.

Mourinho is due to race in the Peter Young Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday.

Slipper test for Godolphin colts at Randwick

Godolphin is poised to increase its Golden Slipper arsenal when Telperion and Souchez line up in the Skyline Stakes at Randwick.

The pair sit atop early markets for Saturday’s group 2 Slipper lead-up with Telperion a slight favourite over his stablemate.

Telperion atoned for a debut defeat in October to score a strong Listed race win earlier this month when he came from last in a small field to overwhelm his rivals.

“Telperion was very impressive and he showed us that he is a lot better when he’s allowed to settle and then run on,” trainer John O’Shea said.

“He’s a lovely big, strong colt who will appreciate the 1200 metres here.

“He looks a Slipper type and at this stage we’re looking at running him.”

With James McDonald opting to stick with Telperion, English jockey William Buick takes the mount on Souchez who posted a Rosehill victory at his only start in December.

O’Shea said the colt’s performance in the Skyline would determine Souchez’s autumn goals.

“Souchez is a very professional type whose work this week has been very sharp,” he said.

“He’ll benefit from the run and we’ll decide after Saturday where he goes next.”

A field of eight will line up in the Skyline while the Sweet Embrace Stakes for the fillies has been reduced to 12 after the scratching of the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Quick Feet.

The unbeaten Gai Waterhouse-trained Scarlet Rain holds sway in Sweet Embrace markets ahead of last-start winners Twist Tops for Kris Lees and In The Vanguard from the John Sargent yard.
