2020 Queensland Cup betting preview
The Listed Queensland Cup is the feature race at Doomben on Saturday afternoon. The 2200m event has attracted a field of just eight runners. Bjorn Baker’s Fun Fact is the favourite and will lead the field, while other market fancies Fastnet Cyclone, Alward and Free Fly Too are all likely to be close in the run.
We are siding with the favourite here in Fun Fact as he returns to Brisbane for the first time since his midfield placing in last year’s QLD Derby behind Mr Quickie and Vow And Declare. He was a dominant winner in the Grand Prix over 2200m and has been racing well without winning this prep. Barrier four will see Jimmy Orman go forward and lead on the grey gelding as they look to make every post a winner.
Last-start Toowoomba Cup runner-up Free Fly Too can turn the tables on Alward in a race that looks to be run to suit. Ben Thompson will likely slot in behind Fun Fact from barrier six, while the six-year-old gelding is certainly one that will see the trip out. He has a placing at Doomben in the past and is a winner at this distance, so he looks a great each-way chance.
Grey Lion has been out of form for a while, but this is the easiest race he has contested in a long time. Once a live chance in a Melbourne Cup, the nine-year-old gelding now races for Matthew Smith at Warwick Farm. He has placed at 2200m before and gets senior rider Robbie Fradd aboard, which is a positive. We expect to see the pair go forward from barrier seven and be right thereabouts in the business end. He ran a great third in Group 3 company in Sydney a fortnight ago, although the 4.5kg rise in weight makes it harder. He can run a good race on class alone.
