Punter’s tips and betting guides to Gold Coast 2YO & 3YO classics

Magic MillionsTHE two major Magic Millions races on the card at Gold Coast have attracted plenty of betting interest this week which has resulted in significant market movement.

The 2YO Classic and the 3YO Guineas are each worth $2 million which gets punters excited with the biggest money coming for Flippant and Flamboyant Lass in the 3YO Guineas.

There hasn’t been as much movement in the 2YO Classic with dominant favourite Capitalist holding the majority of the money at $1.65. The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained colt is unbeaten from two starts to date and there are many multi-bets running through it this Saturday.

Horsebetting.com.au is going to list the best betting opportunities in each of the feature races so punters can make the most of the value being offered by our bookmakers.

Magic Millions 2YO Classic betting tips

1. Betting Capitalist to win

They say small fish are sweet, but that can get you in trouble when betting on horse racing. That being said, the $1.65 looks a decent price for the two-year-old colt to win at the Gold Coast this Saturday. It has looked special in remaining unbeaten from two starts and it has a good running action. Drawing barrier two is perfect so backing it purely to win is one good strategy.

2. Anchoring Capitalist in multiples

Anchoring hot favourites can often work out well for punters. Putting Capitalist to win in quinellas and trifectas can allow for an outsider to finish in the money – boosting the potential payouts. One strategy is to select a handful of rough chances to finish both second and third for trifecta bets. The other strategy, which is a touch more expensive, is to banker Capitalist and select the field for both second and third options. If horses paying anywhere from $5 run in the money the trifecta will be worth the money.

3. Finding the best place bets

The beauty about having a short favourite is that the other runners generally pay more for the place due to their inflated win prices. There are a few unbeaten runners which are at ludicrous odds for the place. Dieters is unbeaten from two starts and it showed good toughness last start. The $4.60 place price at Sportsbet.com.au is good value and this is where punters can strike.

Zelady’s Night Out is a well-regarded type which has won nicely in three starts to date. The Tony Gollan-trained filly is paying $3.60 for the place which is a crazy price considering it has never been beaten. The same rule applies to Candika ($4.40) which has won two starts and Rare Occurrence which won on debut and is paying $15 to win.

Magic Millions 3YO Guineas betting strategies

1. Discard the barrier draws

Fortune certainly didn’t favour the favourites for the 3YO Guineas. Mahuta and Flippant were set to dominate the market, but drawing barriers 20 (Mahuta) and 19 (Flippant) caused punters to second guess themselves. Barriers do make it easier or harder to win, but we think discarding them will be the best strategy in this. The Darren Weir-trained Mahuta is a professional type which knows how to win and it should be able to find some cover. Flippant is also an adaptable filly so stick with these two runners if you fancy them.

2. Ignore last start efforts

There are some handy runners in this field that failed to impress last time out to the races. The likes of Sagaronne ($26), Dram Of Red ($31), Flamboyant Lass ($13) and Single Gaze ($34) are all capable of taking this race out. The Gai Waterhouse-trained Flamboyant Lass has been specked in from $15 to $13 at CrownBet.com.au and the Nick Olive-trained Single Gaze should be forgiven for its most recent effort. Good value for some nice horses.

3. Easybet

This isn’t a cop out, we promise. Taking an easybet takes all the skill out of betting, but in some cases that can be the best way to go about things. Especially for trifecta bets, easybets can return massive dividends for a small spend. There are only three runners under $10 odds and all three are below $5 – which means the majority of the field are paying big money. We think a big rough chance can fill a placing so try your luck.
