Punt Drunk: Get set everybody for a huge week of Group 1 racing

Taxiride - Get Set

Punt Drunk Daily – March 15, 2021

Usually Mondays can well and truly get in the bin, but we have six – yes, six – Group 1 races to look forward to this week. After the weekend that was with that nail-biting finish in the All Star Mile and some good results on the punt, we are more than ready for what is to come. We will keep today’s edition of #PuntDrunk short and sweet.

Truly Great passes away

The Group 1-winning gelding Truly Great from the Grant & Alana Williams stable passed away late on Saturday afternoon due to a suspected snake bite. The son of Dundeel, who took out the Kingston Town Classic last year, had been touted by owner Bob Peters to compete in some of the big races in Melbourne this coming spring. Peters mentioned over the weekend that Truly Great was going to be his Cox Plate horse for this year, which is noteworthy for future markets on Arcadia Queen for Australia’s weight-for-age championship. Truly Great managed eight wins from 14 career starts and earned connections over $1 million in his career. It is always sad to see a horse pass, especially one with such a bright future.

Huge week ahead in Australian racing

How crazy is it that we have six Group 1 races to sink our teeth into over the next few days? Form guides will be flying off the shelves and tips in group chats will go off like you would not believe! The William Reid Stakes kicks off the weekend on Friday night at Moonee Valley with some of the country’s best sprinters set to do battle. Then we move onto Golden Slipper Day at Rosehill on Saturday afternoon, when Australia’s top two-year-olds will duke it out for a $3.5 million purse.

Also run on Golden Slipper Day is the Rosehill Guineas for the three-year-olds, with all eyes on race favourite Mo’unga; The Galaxy, which has more speed in it than a Bali nightclub; the George Ryder Stakes for those on track to compete in the Doncaster Mile; and then finally the Ranvet Stakes, which sees superstar duo Verry Elleegant and Addeybb go head-to-head once more.

Buckle up, punters – this week is a good’un!

Monday racing tips – March 15, 2021

Punt Drunk’s best bet of the day

Paul Messara and Aaron Bullock combine with this Real Impact gelding who was an impressive winner at Mudgee last time out. Akasawa is a natural get-back-and-run-on type, and with Scone tending to suit swoopers in recent times, he should be powering over this lot late on in the piece.

Scone – Race 6 – BM66 Handicap (1600m)#3 Akasawa (12) $1.70 with Sportsbet
