Punt Drunk : Big Day At Karaka Millions, But Still No Prime Time?

Punt Drunk – Sunday, January 24 2021

What a day of racing that was! Not only in our own backyard but across the ditch in New Zealand with the Karaka race day! We saw a couple of stars ready to come across to our Autumn carnivals if connections dare to dream and over here we had a 2YO who sent plenty of tongues wagging! There was plenty of winners to be had, and hopefully the team here at Horsebetting made your Saturday a profitable one!

You do not see that very often!

One thing we love more than anything at Punt Drunk is a winner, and a good one came up early on the Sandown card in the shape of Artorius. The Anthony and Sam Freedman trained two-year-old deadset shit it in in the opener at Sandown. Not many gallopers so early in their juvenile career can settle towards the rear of the field and produce a sharp turn of foot to kick clear. The colt made his rivals look second rate and he is certainly one to watch going into the future! Did anyone say Caulfield Guineas??

How good are the Kiwis?

Did you see the cracking day across the Tasman at Ellerslie Racecourse for the Karaka Millions! If you didn’t it is probably because you didn’t even realise it was on… You would think for such a big race day for our sister country we could at least give them a little bit of prime time on Sky Racing 1. This definitely wasn’t the case as Auckland Racing Club got shoved to the bottom of the barrel and was placed on Sky Racing 2 all afternoon. Was it because we were jealous that they were at full capacity and it would have shit all over our Magic Millions atmosphere?

None the less if you did miss out on all the action, there are some top tier horses to keep a look out for from across the ditch! Levante from the Kelso stable and Aegon from the Baker and Frosman stable. Levante was a remarkable winner on Karaka Millions day when producing a barnstorming turn of foot to claim the Westbury Classic at $1.40. The demolition job justified the short quote and the mare showed she is a force to be reckoned with over the coming years. Aegon was impressive in a completely different way, having to lift himself off the canvas to salute in the Karaka Millions 3YO Classic on Saturday afternoon. The gelding has now won four races from four career starts and if the Moonee Valley Racing Club were smart, they would pick up the phone and call connections to get this rising star into the All Star Mile.

Interview of the year so far?

How bloody great was it to see Peter Nolan just lose his shit over the impressive win his gelding Hankstar produced on Saturday at Gawler?! He sounded like Tom Hafey describing Kevin Sheedy (nothing but a back pocket plumber) but for a horse described as he was, you would be pretty bloody happy to own him! It was a second win in as many weeks, and handed Stacey Metcalfe the second of three winners on the day! Just quietly how good was it having a race meet start at 11am?!?!
