Penola horse betting preview – February 24, 2021
There are eight races set to be run and won at Penola on Wednesday afternoon as another week of racing gets underway in South Australia. The track has come up a Soft 5, but we should see an upgrade to a Good 4 at some stage. With the rail in the true position for the entire circuit, we are set for fair for a good day of racing from 1:05pm ACDT onwards.
Best Bet: Gatsby’s Girl
The Shayne Cahill-trained Gatsby’s Girl was sent around as a $1.30 favourite at Gawler on February 10 but could do no better than third. Having been rolled as a $1.80, $2 and $1.30 favourite this campaign, she is becoming quite costly to follow; however, her consistent form should mean there’s a win coming her way on Wednesday. She returns to the Penola 1100m, where she looked to have been a sure thing beaten three runs ago on January 14 when just missing after a luckless run in the home straight. With a bit more luck from barrier two, she should be too strong for this maiden field.

Next Best: Saduka
Coming off the short five-day backup, we are hoping the 4kg drop in weight and the quick turnaround will be the right tonic to get Saduka back in the winner’s circle for trainer Darryl Dodson. On a day when it was an advantage to be closer to the speed than not, Saduka made up plenty of ground in the home straight when beaten by just over two lengths. From barrier eight look for Kayla Crowther to settle the mare in the back half of the field and before charging home down the outside.

Best Value: Royal Mile
The Lee Creek-trained Royal Mile is yet to run outside the quinella in his three career starts. He returned at Naracoorte as a drifting favourite but defied the market to score by a half-length in the shadows of the winning post. Jacob Opperman has ridden her for all starts to date and sticks aboard here with his 2kg claim, which gets the weight down to a mere 53.5kg. From barrier two he should settle just off the leaders’ heels and then run on to add another victory to his already impressive record.
