PB Lawrence Stakes 2020 racing tips & best bets

Streets of Avalon
Streets Of Avalon is one of several stars lining up in the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes at Caulfield this weekend.

A hint of spring is in the air with seven Group 1 winners returning in the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes at Caulfield. It’s a tight go for favouritism, as Mystic Journey, Savatiano, Arcadia Queen and Regal Power are all between $4 and $6 with online bookmakers. The three ‘S’ horses look to be the lamplighters, with Streets Of Avalon likely to hold out Savatiano and Sirconni. This is sure to be a race worth watching.

Caulfield racing tips for 2020 PB Lawrence Stakes

Best Bet
Streets Of Avalon @ $8 Neds

It’s hard to look past the top of the market in a field of out-and-out superstars, yet that’s exactly what we are doing. Streets Of Avalon won the Group 1 Futurity Stakes back in February over this track and distance and finds himself in a very similar situation here. On that occasion he beat resuming stars such as Kolding, Super Seth and Melody Belle, and we see no reason why he can’t utilise his race fitness to give him an edge. He will race on the speed, while the rail out 9m for the entire circumference will suit. He presents as each-way value and is likely to be right there in the finish. He loves Caulfield (17:4-4-3) and has an outstanding record over the trip (16:5-4-2).

Next Best
Regal Power @ $6 Neds

Regal Power is the clear star of the field after winning the All Star Mile back in March for Grant and Alana Williams. There’s a huge rap on this gelding, as connections believe he can win the Cox Plate or Caulfield Cup. William Pike has also committed to the gelding instead of stablemate Arcadia Queen, who he won the Group 1 Kingston Town Stakes on in 2018. Regal Power will be much fitter for the run, but he must be respected at a track that he races so well on. We’ll be keeping a close eye on him going forward, as well as Kings Will Dream, Mystic Journey and Arcadia Queen.

Best Value
Cascadian @ $14 Neds

James Cummings saddles up Cascadian and Savatiano, who both look winning chances. We are leaning more to the former, who has an outstanding first-up record (4:2-1-0) and identical stats over 1400m. Damien Oliver combines with the baldy-faced chestnut for the first time and will need to produce a great ride from the outside alley. He is likely to settle at the back, which is a slight concern if the track plays leaderish all day, but he is a horse who will take benefit from his spell and will enjoy Melbourne.
