Pakenham Racecourse is scheduled to host an eight-part card on Friday to kick off the club’s night racing season, and HorseBetting’s Victorian betting expert presents his best bets and top quaddie selections for the meeting. The track is rated a Soft 6, the rail is in the true position, and racing is set to commence at 5:15pm AEDT.
Pakenham Best Bet – Baekdu
The Mick Price & Michael Kent Jr-trained Baekdu managed to finish second on debut at Moe on September 30 and looked home for all money until she was run down late. The three-year-old Star Turn filly will only benefit from that run on a Heavy 9, especially with plenty of rain expected in the lead up to Friday night. From barrier two, Patrick Moloney should have no issue in finding the rail and dictating terms, much the same as the duo did at Moe. In a race where most of her rivals are on debut, we expect the race-day experience to be the difference.
Next Best at Pakenham – Wascaly
Smiley Chan and Ben Allen are set to combine with Wascaly in a race where he looks well-placed to make it two wins from three career starts. Having hit the lead early in the home straight at Cranbourne on September 23, he was left vulnerable late and was ultimately reeled in by Brawl. He stays at the mile on Friday night, and if Ben Allen can get early luck aboard the son of Complacent, he looks the obvious leader in the race and should take some running down. His debut win at Wangaratta on September 6 saw him do it the hard way when settling three-wide no cover, so he doesn’t need the run of the race to get a result.
Pakenham Value Bet – Pitchanun
Returning off a five-month spell is the Danny O’Brien-trained Pitchanun, who showed plenty of potential during the autumn and winter months this year. Having chased home the likes of Tyche Goddess, Ecumenical, Ripper Rita and Sirileo Miss, she is a horse with plenty of potential. She no doubt will want further than the 1400m she gets on Friday night, but considering she placed over 1200m when first-up last time out, she may find this to her liking. From barrier three, look for Fred Kersley to have her settled in the first four. With a bit luck, Pitchanun can take this out at a nice price.
