What Pakenham Races
Where Pakenham Racecourse – 420 Nar Nar Goon–Longwarry Rd, Tynong VIC 3813
When Thursday, March 31, 2022
First Race 5:45pm AEDT

Twilight racing continues at Pakenham on Thursday evening with an eight-race card in the waiting for punters to dissect.

The two-year old babies kick things off in race one, which is scheduled for 5:45pm AEDT. It’s going to be a tough one for punters with six of the eight horses having their first start, so respect has to be shown to the Ricky Maund runner, Wildwood Road, which ran third on debut at Morphettville on March 12.

The quaddie commences in race five at 7:45pm, while the last race caps off the card at 9:15pm, where we see an interesting runner, Barretta, have its first start for the Ben Hayes stable. Beretta is an Irish import out of Australia x Secret Marina, so he is sure to turn heads as he goes the barriers for his first race on Australian soil after breaking his maiden at Navan (Ireland) in August.

BEST BET: OCEAN’S THIRTEEN

Ocean’s Thirteen has been granted 63kg, but trainer Ciaron Maher & David Eustace have chosen to take the 2kg claim with Sheridan Clarke on board. Clarke knows the horse and got the chocolates with him on March 10 at this track. This mare enjoys good surfaces and we expect her to land in the first four runners early from a good barrier in two. She remains at 1600m – the distance she won over last start – and carries three more kilograms, but we think the barrier is a big plus here.

Best BetRace 7 – OCEAN’S THIRTEEN $3 with Ladbrokes

NEXT BET: TOBAYSURE

Phillip Stokes and Brett Prebble combine here with a gelding that just missed out last time when second beaten a nose. We think Tobaysure can go one better this time despite being the top weight. His win was at this track on February 10 over 1400m, and the extra 200m in this event should suit as he hits the line hard after usually settling midfield. He was freshened before his unlucky first-up second, but he should be fitter for that.

Next BestRace 6 – Tobaysure $1.45 with Ladbrokes

BEST VALUE: WAYLAID

Shea Eden’s gelding doesn’t have great form but also doesn’t get defeated by very much in his races, which makes him a value chance with the right run. This campaign he has been beaten under three lengths in all runs, and now fourth-up, we think Waylaid may be at peak fitness. Over the 1400m again we expect him to settle midfield, but hopefully for punters he has an extra gear of running down the home straight. Each-way would have to be the play here at very juicy double-figure odds with .

Best ValueRace 3 – Waylaid $19 with Ladbrokes
