Pakenham horse racing preview

The night racing season continues as Pakenham hosts an eight-part card on Thursday night. With the rail out 6m and the track coming up a Good 4, we expect every runner to get their chance throughout the evening. The first race is set to jump at 6pm AEDT.

Best Bet: Awkward

In a BM64 for fillies and mares, the Godolphin-trained Awkward looks hard to hold out despite being well beaten at Sandown on February 10. On that day she ran into a classy-looking type and went down by 3.5 lengths, but her win at the start prior at Geelong on January 24 showed a sharp turn of foot. Despite drawing the carpark, the tactics should not change too much as she is a natural get-back-and-run-on type of filly. Awkward will savage the line late, and with a bit of luck she will keep us alive in the Pakenham quaddie.

Best BetRace 6 – Awkward (#8) $2.70 with Sportsbet

Next Best: Deepstrike

Coming off a near five-month spell, the Mick Price-trained Deepstrike will be looking to build on his smart showing when finishing within three lengths off the classy Ain’tnodeeldun and Victoria Quay. Prior to his fourth-place finish in the Listed Hill Smith Stakes, he had shown more than enough talent to suggest he has plenty of wins in store. We think the first of those wins will come on Thursday night when first up at Pakenham. His lone first-up run to date was on debut when finishing within a head of the winner, and he did his best work late in that effort. He has since undergone the ultimate gear change and should have a bit of class on his side in this.

Next BestRace 4 – Deepstrike (#5) $2.10 with Sportsbet

Best Value: Frederick The Dane

The Dabernig & Hayes-trained Frederick The Dane will come into this 1200m sprint third up on the back of a runner-up performance at Swan Hill on February 16. Getting the blinkers on the near side for the first time and drawing the rail, expect Jye McNeil to take him towards the front of the field. If afforded a quiet time out in front, the blinkers going on should keep his mind on the job. At nice each-way odds, he could prove hard to run down in the final leg of the quaddie.

Best ValueRace 8 – Frederick The Dane (#6) $13 with Sportsbet
