Pakenham will host a seven-race card on Thursday evening as we near the end of the night racing season in Victoria. This is the last chance saloon for the Phillip Stokes-trained Kermy as he heads to the synthetic surface for the first time. With three runner-up efforts and a third place from five starts, he is more often than not fighting out the finish. The son of Kermadec chased home the handy duo of Steinem and Mimi’s Award two starts back, with Steinem set to contest the Australasian Oaks at Morphettville this weekend. Kermy followed up that third-place finish with a runner-up performance at Mornington when a $1.60 favourite. He is drawn to do no work in the run from barrier one, and surely Thursday night is his night to break through for his maiden win.

Next Best: Fac
Greg Eurell and Jamie Mott team up in the second race on the card with the last start runner-up Fac. He was solid enough in the market on that debut run, and the son of The Factor looks to get every favour here from barrier one. On the back of a slow tempo, he should be right on the leaders’ heels at the top of the straight. He looks to be good for this maiden field that lacks depth.

Best Value: Rock The Bowler
The Peter Galagotis-trained Rock The Bowler is a different type of galloper when on the synthetic surface. The five-year-old gelding out of Fastnet Rock has won three of his 15 starts, with all of those wins coming from his four runs on the plastic. The slight query is that he only has one minor placing from five starts at 1600m, but on the synthetic surface we expect him to run a bold race at a nice price.
