Pakenham racing preview – March 18, 2021

Victorian night racing continues this week with an eight-race card at Pakenham on Thursday evening. The track has come up a Soft 5, but with a favourable forecast we should be racing on a Good 4. The rail is in the true position throughout, so every runner should get their chance on the night. The first field is set to face the start at 6pm AEDT.

Best Bet: Ripper Rita

We are looking to kick off the night in style with the Greg Eurell-trained Ripper Rita, who is back from a four-month spell. The filly showed plenty of talent during her debut campaign despite not breaking through for a maiden victory. She was a length off a win in Listed grade two starts back and then was far from disgraced in the Listed Twilight Glow behind Hindaam and La Mexican at her last start, so the form suggests she is the one to beat. Having drawn barrier three, Jamie Mott should have no issue in getting the Street Boss filly to the rail, from where he can opt to either take a sit off the leader or step up and set the pace. Either way, Ripper Rita has the class behind her and should be too good for this small field.

Next Best: Big Friday

The Michael Huglin-trained Big Friday will be looking to go one better than his last-start second behind Deepstrike over this track and distance on March 4. The three-year-old gelding was outclassed on the line in that race but put nearly five lengths on third place, and he may never get a better chance to break his maiden than here on Thursday night. Having drawn in the middle of the pack, we expect Luke Nolen to head forward on the son of Nostradamus and from the one-one position be too strong for his rivals late on.

Next BestRace 3 – Big Friday (#4) $2.05 with Sportsbet

Best Value: Tyche Goddess

The returning Tyche Goddess lands herself in a winnable BM70 on the back of a debut campaign which saw her run in the VRC Oaks. Her run in the Oaks left a bit to be desired, but we are willing to forgive that. Based on her close third in the Wakeful Stakes, she has the class to get the job done over 1400m. From barrier six, expect the in-form Ben Allen to settle Tyche Goddess just outside the leader. Here’s hoping the Busuttin & Young team have her raring to go first up.

Best ValueRace 6 – Tyche Goddess (#4) $7.50 with Sportsbet
