Pakenham betting tips – Thursday, January 28
In a week where we are spoilt for horse racing choices in Victoria, Pakenham hosts an eight-race card on Thursday to help keep us building a bank in the lead up to a big weekend in Melbourne. The track has come up as a Soft 5, but a clear forecast means we should see an upgrade early on. With the rail out 3m, we are set for a competitive evening of racing.
Best Bet: Duke Of Neworleans
In the opening leg of the Pakenham quaddie, we are expecting Duke Of Neworleans to bounce back from a third-place finish at Sandown on January 6. Despite being headed at the 100m mark in that race, he kept fighting to the line to go down by just under a length. However, we’re going back to his maiden victory at Geelong two runs ago, where he was a dominant eight-length winner following an easy run out in front. He goes up to 1400m for the first time and, in a race bereft of early pace, should have no issues at the head of the field once again, so good luck catching him.

Next Best: Fighter
It’s last-chance saloon for punters with the Tony McEvoy-trained Fighter, who has started his career with four consecutive runner-up performances. At Moonee Valley on January 15, he gave the eventual winner too much of a start and could not reel it in despite taking considerable ground once entering the home straight. Prior to that effort he was nosed out in consecutive runs in South Australia. The long straight at Pakenham will suit Fighter’s racing style perfectly, so he should break his maiden here in an easier race.
Race 3 – Fighter (#2)[rmOC_events_list event_ids=1360091_03]
Best Value: Gutsy
Prior to a last-start seventh at Moonee Valley on January 15, the Ellerton & Zahra-trained Gutsy had been racing in fine form. In the six runs to start his campaign he had not finished worse than second, with two wins to his name in that time. He had excuses at The Valley, where he lost a plate in the running. From barrier 10 we expect him to roll forward and run a cheeky race at a nice price in the second leg of the quaddie.
