Pakenham Cup Day betting preview

The Listed Pakenham Cup is the featured event on a nine-race card at the Tynong track on Saturday afternoon. The surface has come up a Good 4, but conditions could change late in the day if the forecast showers hit. We’re expecting minimal impact, however, and deep fields all through the card mean there should be plenty of value on offer. The first race of the day will jump at 12:50pm AEDT.

Best BetRace 2 – Meteorite (#8) $2.80 with Sportsbet

Having won twice from four starts this campaign, Meteorite shapes as our best bet on Pakenham Cup Day. He was sent around a short-priced favourite a fortnight ago at Moonee Valley and was tipped by many as a near moral, yet he ran into one better over the final furlong. He gets the in-form Jamie Kah onboard for the first time in his career, and there aren’t many other jockeys we would want on a frontrunner. There doesn’t look to be too much pace underneath the pairing, so they should prove hard to run down if they can get across to the rails.

Next BestRace 1 – Nantucket (#3) $3.70 with Sportsbet

Nantucket returned in fine style at Bendigo three weeks back when chasing down the runaway leaders and then kicking clear in the final furlong to break his maiden. With plenty of speed drawn underneath him, Joe Bowditch will need to settle him towards the rear of the field. This horse has an electric turn of foot that may catch plenty of his rivals napping.

Best ValueRace 8 – Iconoclasm (#1) $9 with Sportsbet

The clear class runner in what is now a 12-horse field, Iconoclasm comes to Pakenham in decent enough form to suggest he can play a pivotal role in the penultimate race on the card. He couldn’t keep up with the fast tempo set in the Sandown Stakes three weeks back, but he meets an easier assignment here and looks a good value bet. All 11 of his career wins have come on dry tracks; if the rain stays aways, he and Damian Lane will look to continue their remarkable affiliation together. They have only missed the quinella on one occasion, with two wins from five starts together.
