2020 Pakenham Cup betting preview

A field of 10 has been accepted for the Listed Pakenham Cup on Saturday afternoon. It’s been a hard race for market elects in recent years, with the last three winners all saluting at double-figure odds.

Matt Cumani will be hoping Craig Williams’ return to the saddle will help flip the ordinary form Creedence has shown since his win at Moonee Valley back in early September. While the five-year-old wasn’t beaten far in the three starts since his last win, he looked well below par on all three occasions. We’re hoping that the small field and drop in grade will benefit him greatly. Williams has had success aboard the gelding before and will look to get him into a prominent spot early on from barrier one, where they are drawn to do no work. With a bit of luck early in the home straight, Creedence should be hard to hold out after an economical run.

David Brideoake and Jye McNeil will be hoping to replicate the performance that saw Princess Jenni win the Bendigo Cup five weeks ago. The mare was able to settle just off the pace before kicking clear at the final furlong marker and holding out a handy import in Pondus. Prior to that she had been over-racing since resuming her spring campaign, but she settled much better at Bendigo and got her reward. From barrier 10, McNeil will look to get a bit of cover around the middle of the pack. If Princess Jenni can handle the big weight, she should be fighting out the finish.

Haky was disappointing last time out when racing up on speed in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes. However, two starts back he looked to be working to the line nicely when running into the minor money in the Bendigo Cup. If we’re happy to be on Princess Jenni’s side, it would be silly to leave out Archie Alexander’s gelding. Jamie Kah was at the helm for that Bendigo Cup run and jumps on for just the third time as Haky looks to give punters a big sight at each-way odds.
