Racing heads back to Pakenham Racecourse for its weekly eight-race card on Thursday night, and HorseBetting’s Victorian form expert presents his best bets and quaddie picks along with odds from our featured online bookmakers. The track is rated a Good 4, the rail is out 9m the entire circuit, and racing kicks off at 5:45pm AEDT.

Pakenham Best Bet – Arktika

In the second leg of the quaddie, we anticipate the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Arktika will remain undefeated following her smart debut win. The three-year-old filly by Snitzel did plenty wrong on that day, but over the final 50m she managed to draw clear and put over two lengths on her closest rival. She draws barrier one on Thursday, so we expect John Allen to be positive early in finding her a position just off the speed. She has a ripping turn of foot and looks the goods despite needing to lug 61kg. The only thing that gets Arktika beaten on Thursday night is bad luck in the home straight.

Next Best Bet at Pakenham – Silly Salmon

One of our better bets of the night comes up in the opening event, where the Michael Huglin-trained Silly Salmon will look to build on his last-start third at Flemington on January 21. The three-year-old gelding by Fighting Sun managed to finish 1.5 lengths off the smart Madame Du Gast and only three-quarters of a length off subsequent Moonee Valley winner Elite Icon. With the form franked and a want to lead, she looks like she will take some running down on Thursday, especially with the rail out 9m. Brett Prebble hops back on board and considering the champion jockey is going down to Pakenham for just two rides, it looks to be a strong indicator that Silly Salmon should be simply winning this. Look for him to hunt for the rail early on and if he can catch a breather mid-race, he will prove too quick for this lot over 1200m.

Best Value Bet at Pakenham – Euro Dandy

The Chris Calthorpe-trained Euro Dandy returns from a 15-week spell and brings some strong form-lines into the third leg of the quaddie. The three-year-old son of Eurozone was narrowly beaten by the smart Jimmy The Bear before heading for a spell and was also well supported in the Listed Super Impose Stakes the start prior. He has trialled nicely in preparation for this first-up run and already has a win when resuming from a spell, so we know he will handle the occasion. Damien Thornton will look to have him settled in the second half of the field, and we expect he will prove too hard to hold out with black-type racing on the agenda this autumn.
