Twilight racing continues on Thursday with a competitive eight-race card at Pakenham. The two-year-old fillies kick the evening off at 5:45pm AEDT with a keen watch on Ben & JD Hayes’ two first-starters. In the last race, we take a good look at the Maher & Eustace-trained Saint Of Katowice – an Irish import who is back in the state after a Sydney run last outing. The quaddie legs start at 7:45pm with Michael Moroney’s Zegusto attracting early market support at the top betting sites.
BEST BET: SAINT OF KATOWICE
This five-year-old gelding has been freshened for this after he ran fourth at Canterbury Park six weeks ago when beaten less than two lengths. Before that, Saint Of Katowice was seventh to the handy Paperboy at Caulfield. Prior to that effort he was fifth beaten only 1.15 lengths to So Risque, who also shows talent. Being his fourth run from a spell and having two jump-outs behind quality horses, we think he should be ready to show his best now. Despite not having been in the money his last three starts, he is a consistent type who has been in the frame 13 of 18 times. The Peter Gelagotis-trained Titan Of Choice is a clear danger and has Craig Williams on board. Maui for Phillip Stokes and jockey Zac Spain must be respected after a solid first-up fourth at Sale. His jump-out at this track was a winning one on February 1, so he has experience here.
NEXT BEST: NAICONI
Tony & Calvin McEvoy prepare this two-year-old filly out of Nicconi x Embark who ran second at Ballarat on March 8 when running on well the last 200m. He won a jump out on January 18 over 800m and he gets a familiar jockey in Dean Holland on board again. After three jump-outs and one race this year, we think he is ready now. All Sassed Up and My Haruconi have to be respected and must be added into the multiples.
BEST VALUE: MISS MATADOR
The Clinton McDonald-trained Miss Matador ran on quite well on debut, where she made up a lot of ground after getting too far back early. That was at Cranbourne over 1000m, and we are banking on a bigger track and the extra 200m helping in this one. There should be a bit more pace on in this one, too, which should help. Cateechee will likely start favourite for Mike Moroney and jockey Jordan Childs.
