First Race 06:00pm AEDT

Pakenham is the scene for the second race meeting in Victoria on Thursday when the track hosts an eight race card to continue the night racing season. With clear skies forecast, and the track already a Good 4 we are set fair for what looks to be a cracking card of midweek racing. With Pakenham the track always tends to race fairly, and with such a wide track and a long home straight there should be no excuses on Thursday night for any fancied runners. The first at Pakenham is set to jump at 6pm AEDT.

Best Bet – Race 2 Dunvegan (#2)

Matt Laurie and Damian Lane will look to build on the consecutive runner up performances that Dunvegan has put together and hope to go one better at Pakenham on Thursday night. The gelding has strung together runner up finishes at Mornington and then Cranbourne and arguably should have got the job done in at least one of those races. His last start at Cranbourne saw him having to sustain a long run from the 600m mark and ultimately peaked on that run in the final 75m. From barrier five, Lane should have no issue in settling in a more prominent position on Thursday night, and should be getting the job done in a pretty thin maiden field early on the Pakenham card.

Next Best – Race 4 Butter Chicken (#7)

Following a tough runner up performance at Cranbourne on January 8, we’re backing the Grahame Begg trained Butter Chicken to break her maiden at Pakenham on Thursday night. After travelling three wide with no cover towards the rear of the field, she needed to sustain a long run to the front of the field where she was only beaten a nose on debut. The quinella had put enough of a space on the remainder of the field to suggest she should be too strong for the field she meets on Thursday night. From barrier nine, she’ll need to find cover early on unlike a fortnight ago, and if she does, she will take a power of beating.

Best Value – Race 8 Sophia’s Choice (#2)

Robert Kingston will be hoping the 3kg claim of Celine Gaudray can see his four-year-old mare Sophia’s Choice back into the winners’ stall. Despite drawing the car park here in the final leg of the Pakenham quaddie, she has enough early pace to overcome the draw and will look to run a cheeky race for us at odds. Her last start showed she can settle outside the leader, but ultimately found one better, and having not finished outside of the quinella in races over 1200m she will be there when the whips are cracking.
