Painted Firetail comes back with Sydney Championships on radar

Painted FiretailA PROMISING filly returns for Godolphin at Randwick this Saturday and the knowledgeable punters have taken note.

Three-year-old filly Painted Firetail resumes in the Top Ideal SCM Handicap at Randwick and Godolphin believe it’s a type which can embark on the Sydney autumn carnival (The Championships).

The daughter of Lonhro has had set backs throughout its short career, having just two starts for a win and a placing. Assistant trainer Darren Beadman thinks Painted Firetail will show punters plenty on the race track this campaign and it’s considered one of their top fillies alongside Ambience, Antelucan, Pearls and Ottoman.

“She’s come back bigger and stronger, and looks well,” Beadman said.

“John [O’Shea] has got quite a lot of three-year-old fillies so it’s a matter of trying to get them on the board.

“She’s had interrupted preparations with a few little issues here and there but she had some residual fitness there so we thought we would push on a bit earlier this preparation.

“We’ve given her the time she’s needed and now we’ll see where she levels out at but we hope the sky is the limit.”

Painted Firetail is paying $3.20 at CrownBet.com.au for this Saturday’s run and Beadman is confident it has the class to win fresh up.

“She’s as forward as what John can get her first-up but generally if they’ve got a bit of class they can overcome whatever they are lacking in fitness,” Beadman added.

James McDonald takes the ride from barrier six, but it won’t be easy with six runners currently under $8 at Sportsbet.com.au.

Blue Diamond market updates after holiday racing

The Blue Diamond market has updated after some hotly-contested holiday period racing. Global powerhouse Godolphin currently have 20 horses nominated for the $1.5 million Blue Diamond Stakes on February 27 and Calliope is the best-fancied runner from the stable.

The Exceed And Excel filly was a debut winner in the Listed Gimcrack and it leads the royal blue charge at Caulfield next month.

The Mick Price-trained Extreme Choice is the bookmakers top elect at $4 which is very short this far out from the race, but its form reads well and it has a bright future ahead of it.

New Zealand runner Manolo Blahniq has also come in for support after a strong win at Ellerslie last time out. It’s now into $9 with Sportsbet.com.au and will likely shorten as it continues its Blue Diamond preparation.
