2020 Northerly Stakes betting preview
The Group 3 Northerly Stakes over 1400m has drawn a strong field of 16 runners for the 2020 edition at Perth’s Ascot Racecourse this Saturday. It is $6 the field currently, with Massimo and Red Can Man sharing favouritism ahead of Cup Night and Money Matters. It’ll be a genuine tempo up front, set by Vital Silver and Great Shot.
We are with Kay Cee to make it four wins on the trot. She won the Kingston Town Classic last year and was dominant in her two wins during the winter. She is undefeated from three starts over 1400m and has never been out of the placings at Ascot. From barrier five, Steve Parnham will let the race unfold in front of him and finish right over the top of them. She is a Group 1 winner and brings the form, so she’s the one they’ve got to beat.
Massimo is in red-hot form with four wins from his last five starts. His only defeat in that stretch came at the hands of the very talented Inspirational Girl, who won impressively last weekend. He has progressed nicely through the grades and gets his first chance at Group 3 level here. Drawn in gate four, he’ll be right on the leader’s hammer and smoking the pipe as they corner. He loves Ascot and goes great guns over 1400m, so there’s no worries there. He rarely runs a bad race and should be in this every step of the way.
If Vital Silver brings his best, he’ll brain them here. Twice placed at Group 1 level and never out of the placings at Group 3 level, the seven-year-old grey gelding will make his own luck out in front and take plenty of running down. Jumping from barrier nine under Joseph Azzopardi will be no issue, as they’ll cross over to the plastic easily enough. He looked to need the run last start after finding traffic and peaking late, but we expect that he will be better for the run and can bounce back here. He’s the right price to find out.
