Newitt excited about Slipper day chances

An already successful autumn carnival for jockey Craig Newitt could go to another level when he heads to Sydney for Golden Slipper day at Rosehill.

Fresh from his second Group One win in Melbourne this year in Saturday’s $1.25 million Newmarket Handicap on The Quarterback, Newitt heads to the Golden Slipper to reunite with his Blue Diamond Stakes-winning mount Extreme Choice.

He is also on Victoria Derby winner Tarzino who looms as the horse to beat in Saturday’s Group One Rosehill Guineas.

Both Extreme Choice and Tarzino are trained by Mick Price with whom Newitt has had a successful association for several years including 17 Group One wins.

Price has Extreme Choice and Flying Artie in the $3.5 million Golden Slipper and they occupy the top two lines of betting at $2.80 and $6 respectively.

They ran the quinella in the Blue Diamond on February 27 and arrived in Sydney on Friday morning to prepare for the Slipper.

Newitt will ride Extreme Choice in a course proper gallop at Rosehill on Tuesday morning while Damien Oliver will partner Flying Artie in his work-out.

“I can’t wait to get up there,” Newitt said.

“They will both gallop together.

“Tarzino will just float up on the Wednesday before the race.

“So next Saturday I should have two good chances at winning Group Ones again. It’s been a good autumn.”

Newitt can’t fault Extreme Choice since the Blue Diamond.

“I haven’t seen a change in the horse,” he said.

“The horse is just going great. By all reports he has travelled up good. We’ve just got to keep him ticking over.

“I don’t think he has to improve. I don’t think the other horse has to improve. They’ve just got to hold their form.”

Tarzino was narrowly beaten by Palentino second-up in the Australian Guineas at Flemington and Newitt is looking forward to the colt stepping up to 2000m.

“He’s flying,” Newitt said.

“I galloped him the reverse way on Saturday morning and he’s going great.

“The further he goes the better he’ll be.”
